Bloody rain

Lovely day this morning, so on the way home from the bike shop, with clear blue skies, I decided that after a spot of lunch, I'd head out on my new bike again.
during lunch, the heavens opened so furiously that I couldn't see out of the living room window. hmm, maybe I shall postpone the ride then.
Few hours later, clear blue skies and dazzling sunshine again, so I get out on the bike. by the time I've made it 2KM, it's drizzling lightly, but nothing serious. After 15 minutes or so, it's clear blue skies again.
17KM from home, and I get caught up in the most intense rainstorm I've ever witnessed.
It was raining so heavily that my shoes were filling up and spilling over, the rain was coming down faster than they could drain.
just, just before I make it back home, nearly 40KM into the ride, it clears up again.
DAMMIT!

gotta love the rain had some of my best riding in the rain. no wait i always come of0

I got caught out in similar the other day. Start out in t-shirt in glorious sunshine with little cloud got to a nice stretch of hills half way round the loop and realised the sheep off in the distance were covered in cloud. So I tried to out-cycle heavy black rain clouds and failed. Was that bad by the time I got home not only did I have to strip myself down I had to strip the bike down too, due to the level of shite that was kicked up.
Like the idea of "bloody rain", sounds eerily sinister, not sure I'd like to be caught out in it.0 -
Started using: http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ it's not bad at all (for my area)0
-
Glorious were i am, Been sat outside all day 8)
No doubt it will be pissing down tomorrow.0 -
To be honest the stronly changeble conditions this year(along with some work related issues) has really dented my get out there motivation.
i'm happy to ride in the wet, and love the dry.. but it annoys me being in gourgous sun one minutes then plunged into icy rain and wind. how can you prepare for it all it hurts my head:( never knows such instantly changeble weather0 -
Seriously, keep an eye on http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ over a week or so to see how accurate it is for you. It'll give you immediate rain play and immediate rain coverage and projected rain if you press the Forecast Ahead button. It's given me a reasonable heads up as to whether to take a XC riding umbrella.0

Stop Press - weather in Britain extremely changeable - Shock

yeh, but there's summer changeable and taking the p!ss. And there's no way summers were like this when I was growing up, we actually had pretty clearly defined seasons with predictable weather periods, nothing like this.0

Lol Porgy,
I live in wales its always been changeble, but never this bad. been camping where it was due to hammer down and possibly snow on the mountains what happened that weekend (bearing in my mind i checked the reports all round before i left) I swaeted my bits of in thermals as it was 25degrees for 3days where is was meant to be barely above 13 lol.
Can't even do my normal its not raining lets go for 2 hour blast with out taking about 3 different sets of kit.. i blame america!0 -
Apparently the North Atlantic jetstream is not in its 'usual' place for this time of year and so we are getting a faceful of warm, wet weather. I blame the French.0
-
I grew up in the foothills of Dartmoor where you get all four seasons most days, and often all at the same time.
I've just been cycling round Suffolk for a week and did notice that bright sunny blue skies would turn thundery and then back to sunny in space of a few minutes, but that's normal on Dartmoor. I've no idea if that's normal in Suffolk though.
It would be interesting to see some objective data on this though - if there is any.
I blame Al Gore.0 -

and they say that every year after wash out summers.0 -
I think our pleasant Summer is gone - bad weather forecast for the rest of July.

Still, it often kicks up some good waves :twisted:0 -

Funny, I'm back where I grew up at the moment (dark peak) and no-one's going to convince me that weather patterns and seasons have not changed in that period, I talk to some of the sane old timers who're left and they comment on even greater variations in weather and seasonal merging from when they grew up. There is data available specific to this country but not to hand online, your nearest reliable source, but it's for global trends and stats, is courtesy of: http://www.realclimate.org/ they have extensive categories detailing everything climate related, if i get time I'll root out some of the UK specific stuff that I remember is there.0 -
Friday August 9th you can get out of your canoe and step into the sunshine funshine.0

I hate rain its the one type of weather that i cannot stand, any other type of weather is fine but rain I HATE!!!
I blame terrorists and the credit crunch for this sh1tty summer!Tis better to regret something you've done than to regret not doing something!0 -
Well, to be fair, wind is worse for riding in, but what wnnoys me is how you can't really get prepared ofr a ride at the moment.
It's 24 degrees C and baking sun one minute, then in a few seconds, you're shivering cold and soaking wet.0 -
To paraphrase the Big Yin, there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.
I got myself a really light rainproof that packs down to the size of a tennis ball and has a small karabiner so it can hang off a belt loop. Ideal for changeable weather where it won't be freezing but could be very wet. Found it keeps the wind off too when stopped for a pint.0 -
Aye, but what about when it goes from roasting hot to freezing cold rain? I'm talking the kind of freezing wind and monsoon rain that demands a giant Vango jacket. A little shell would not have cut it yeterday (or today, but I didn't venture out today)0
-
Now that sounds like a good ideaTis better to regret something you've done than to regret not doing something!0
