London to Paris _Help

I am doing the London to Paris bike ride in May next year and need advise on what bikes we should be looking for.
Our local cycling club is really helpful and they are helping us find the right bikes.
We have a very limited budget and our aim is to get a sponsor to provide. Having just got my first copy of Cycling plus I'm amazed at the prices of bikes.
So my question is "what would people recommend as a good starting point bearing in mind we will probably never do this sort of thing again and the bike will be either used for pleasure afterwards(if we buy it ourselfs) or auctioned if its donated.
The trip is 500km over 4 days and we are raising money for cystic fibrosis.
