My new commute in a few weeks, or when ever i get cleared any way. 2 miles, and about as close to flat as possible, most of it though Bushy Park.

any one got a even more pathetic commute?

dangerous distance to commute, used to a similar commute a long time ago, and was always late, the - that'll only take 5 mins syndrome. :)

Mine is 2.8 miles with a total ascent of 41m and half off road. Or I can extend it to 3 miles and make all of it on quiet residential roads/bridlepaths apart from 20 metres

Especially as on my commute the bus takes 25mins door to door and I can cycle it in 12mins at a fairly leisurely pace.

yes i used to drive to work on at pre 5am 8 miles took 10mins or so, i was always just late...
  • How about 1 mile, zero climbing (it is Cambridgeshire) and including dropping off my 2 kiddies at school.

Even so the charge from the school to work can leave me out of breath if I ride it as an 800 meters standing start race against the cars.

Don't know if you could call mine a commute exactly? - I'm self employed and live in semi rural Scotland - I haul myself significantly less than 2 miles - more like 1 and a bit but hey, the last 100 metres is up a hill

I used to do less than a mile then I MTFU'd and increased this to 2.4 which is all in rush hour traffic and takes about 10 mins according to the camera footage. Glad of red lights to take a quick breather. I could look at increasing this to 5 miles if I so desired but that would rob me of head and pillow time :(
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

My commute is exactly 1 mile door to door. In fact in the winter it probably takes longer to get my waterproofs on than actually ride to work!!

Look folks - it's all about equipment! Eg, my 7 mile run isn't that far but I've made it hurt more by doing it on an MTB and chucking an unneccessary hill into the route. All you need to do is find a means to make your 1 or 2 mile rides a bit more serious and I have the answer.

My old London commute was pretty simple, off the train at Vic, up Grosvenor Place then along Kensington to Imperial College, all of 2.8 miles with the occasional jaunt through the park if I couldnt be arsed with the Gym first thing.

It was slightly different when I had to go to Biggin Hill mind..........

Mine's about 2.1 miles on the way in, 2.5 coming back (that way works out about the same time, don't go in that route due to traffic). Pretty flat except for one rail bridge. Usual psycho motorists, no other real hazards. It may be short, but it's still more fun than the alternatives, and still a useful training opportunity!

Mine's probably as pathetic, but maybe not more so.

1.9 miles, and I climb a handful of metres. Still, at least I get to work quickly. :D

  • I have a 2.98 mile commute but I now do an extra 10 mile loop in an attempt to improve. However I've recently had to temporarily move to within less than 1 mile of work and all foul of the 5min Syndrome Blu3cat mentioned. Fortunately when I arrive out of breath minutes before 9am, my colleagues just presume I've been for a bracing 13mile cycle :)

I have a 7.5 mile commute into central Glasgow from a leafy northern suburb, however on way home I try and vary it, heading off east, west, and at times south. Best one so far was 7.5 in and 43.5 home. Took in Clydebank, Dumbarton, Balloch, Loch Lomond and Drymen. Magic stuff!!

Would love to do more in morning but just canny be 4rs3d getting up earlier to put in the extra miles, plus I love my morning fix of racing busses down Maryhill Road.

But what is remotely pathetic about 7.5 miles as a commute? I suspect it is pretty much average unless you are doing it on an electric bike! Kudos for the lopsided out and return mileages :D

on nice days might well be tempted to take the nice bike and do a few before will depend on if one can change etc at work.

About a 5 second walk to the office in our house.

However me and Mrs Matt alernate a 12.5 mile route (and alternate between an MTB version and a road version) - I do three "commutes", she does two then we do more at the weekends.

We both run on non cycle days - we have a 9 month old so one of us has to look after him!

When we lived in Reading, my missus rode about half a km to work. I'd have thought walking would have been easier.

From my window next year I can see my lecture building - 100m over the river, 100m up a fiendishly steep hill (known to some as Cardiac Hill) and I'm there. It's pretty pathetic although at 5 to 9 even walking up it does basically kill me.

During my Uni days (at Plymouth) I used to unicycle commute. It was just over a mile to unicycle and quite a bit less to walk. This was due the choosing a route that meant not having to dismount; taking the underpasses and subways rather than just crossing the road. I didn't even have a real bike, so forgive me for using the pavement.
Does make your abs look good tho 8)

Until about 2 years ago I had a decent 8 mile flat commute, I've now moved and still have a flat commute but it's only a mile.
The benefits mean I can leave my backpack in the office and come back for it at the end of the really large loops, or just down in it at home and keep going. But the downside is my milleage is down as in morning as it's difficult to force myself to extend the journey especially given the now intermittent hot water supply the office seems to be suffering from. :(
