Tip for future prevention of mouldy bladder.

When you get home from a ride, rinse it out properly straight away then put it straight in the freezer and leave it there until you next use it. That way, you don't need to worry about drying it properly to prevent future feisty-ness.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

Hot water and lemon juice. Leave it an hour or so then rinse.

I leave the bladdder pack full of water after each ride, in the sack, in the garage, sometimes in the hot boot of the car. Then prior to using it I rinse it out with water as hot as I can stand, shake it about a bit. Drain plenty out of the pipe.
When it looks a bit grimy, I leave some cheap tesco baby bottle steralising tabs + hot water in it over night.
    Never had a problem.

That's pretty much what I do.

I only ever fill with water, less oportunities for "growth"

I wash it out after each ride and drain the entire pack using hotwater through the drinking pipe to flush out any nasties. I get it as dry as I can and leave it hanging up. I use powdered SIS drinks in my pack so I make sure to rinse it out as soon as I get home.

We don't have mains water so there is no chlorine to kill any of the germs. So if you leave it wet even, it is more likely to get moldy. I don't let it go brown on purpose honest!!

I like the freezer idea, makes sense as bacteria are less likely to grow in such cold conditions, but I think it could harm the rubber/plastic of the bladder itself making it prone to tearing.

Borderboy, where abouts on the english/welsh boder do you live? (sorry a little OT)

When I said "let your camalbak go moudly" I didnt mean it as an insult. I've left drink in there for 2 weeks (forgot to empty it after a ride, was then on road bike for 2 weeks) and it was disgusting afterwards. But that cleaning brush thing got it back to good as new again.
  • For a clean/freshen-up of a manky (but not mouldy) bladder:

Ingredients: 2tbsp lemon juice (e.g. Jif from a bottle), 2tbsp bicarbonate of soda (not baking powder!!) 500ml water.

Add lemon juice to water, stir, add bicarb to solution, let fizz die down. Pour into bladder, shake, let fizz out of bite valve, shake again, let fizz out again. Leave for 20 mins. Rinse well with clean water. Insert wooden spoon and stand whole lot upright to dry.

Removes bad odours, tastes etc. Works for SIGG bottles as well.

(If really filthy/mouldy clean well beforehand and if necessary use a sterilising fluid after).

(Above is from memory and works ok - full tip is on livefortheoutdoors.com here:http://www.livefortheoutdoors.com/Videos/Search-Results/Walking/How-to-deep-clean-a-hydration-system/Post.aspx)
