Technique for getting chain back on without stopping

As the post says, really: what is the technique? Presumably putting your heal under the chain and picking it up a bit and somehow flicking it on, perhaps with derailleur set to the larger chainring?

I have always stopped to do this, but it would be handy to learn.

If it comes off on the inner ring, pedal gently while easing the front mech over to the outer ring (i.e. with the gear lever), the chain will go back on. If it comes off the big ring, do the opposite. The trick is to ease it over slowly, if you go straight for the full click the chain may jam.

It shouldn't happen very often if your limit screws are set correctly.

I agree with alfablue. I had a problem with my Basso dropping the chain off the big ring and I could get it back on by shifting the front derailleur inwards and pedalling carefully. That problem was due to worn parts rather than endstop misadjustment - I couldn't change up onto the big ring without overshifting and sometimes I overdid it.

If you have a problem dropping your chain inwards, I highly recommend fitting a Deda Dog Fang chain keeper. (That's a link to a review on my blog). I've now got them fitted to all 3 of my bikes and don't have that problem any more.

it doesn't happen often, but just wanted to know how to do it and avoid getting my hands dirty. Thanks

I forgot to add one thing... The big chainring usually has a little peg sticking from the outside of it. Make sure that lines up with inside of your crank because it is there to block the gap and stop your chain getting wedged in there, should it ever fall off in that direction.

If my chain comes off big ring then i just pedal very slowly and it goes back normally. No need to shift i find, but might try it next time it happens if it starts being awkward

I have a Deda Dog Fang so I can't lose the chain off the small ring. Started dropping the chain off the big ring onto the crank if I shifted up too enthusiastically; as above, slowly pedalling forwards while shifting the mech a bit inwards usually lifted it back on.
Had a fiddle with the upper limit screw; now it's not overshifting any more.
