how much travel do you think is worhty for uk riding. ?

i know there's a lot of various factors that will come into play like were you live and ride what type of riding you do ect rider weight,..

i currently have a
pace rc305 hardtail running 140mm trav up front. (use this as a winter wet weather bike)
and a
santacruz heckler set up on fox talasrc2 36 running 160mm trav and a rp23 rear shock 5.9 inch rear,... (this set up is cause i have used it as my whistler bike as i have been lucky to go 3 time in the last 15 months and am heading back in september) the heckler is amazing down hill on big(ish) terrain and even ok going up hill to but i feel it's a tad over kill for average uk riding(trail centres)

i think the reason for my question is i have my eye on a scott spark 30 (120mm front and i think it's 110mm rear) i am trying to justify weather i need thiis bike or not...

Getting the spark would definetly give you a good range of bikes, but if you think the travel on your heckler is too much, then I think you already know the answer to your question.

Test ride the spark, or something similar, if youre really not sure.

And do you really need it? No, of course you dont. You just want it. If you got the cash, go for it.

need probably being the wrong word to use definatly want,. i feel my heckler is a little overkill for some of the riding i do locally anyway,..
i love my pace hardtail it is an amazing singletrack weapon it's truely at home on the trail centres single track,,

i am just curious to see what travel others use and what terrain they ride on there bikes..

I have a do-it-all 6.5'' trail bike, that is overkill for some of my riding. However, it's ALOT of fun, and a total hooligan bike when the terrian points down, or drops / jumps etc!

I love it, and wouldn't change it if I could!

    Fix it 'till it's broke
  • I think you have the perfect mix of bikes already. The Scott will be a bit nicer to ride uphill than the Heckler, but much worse on the fun stuff. And it won't be anywhere near as much fun as your HT. I'd save the money and spend it on something else.

I don't buy the "overkill in the UK" argument - I think big travel, big fun bikes like your Heckler are perfect for UK riding; you can ride them all day up and downhill and even get in some proper DH and jump action. For most people, most of the time, they're superb. Of course you wouldn't want to race XC with them, but that's not the point.
