moving from mechanical to hydraulic brakes

hi.
i've got a carrera vuclan 08 disc xc mtb. it's the first time i've had discs on a bike at all. thing is, i'm a large chap, and even after the LBS serviced it, the front brake worries me. ie it's damn hard to stop on steep slopes... the back brake skids before the front brake grabs hold and stops every time.
i'm wondering of a move up to hydraulic brakes would give better stopping power, and how far i have to go into hydraulic brake territory to make a difference.
weight isn't that much of an issue, well, not the wieght on the bike anyway, and i don't mind if they're not a new product... just don't know where to start with looking.
thanks in advance

I'd check that the front pads are ok - or try a bigger rotor? Is a cheap starter for you.
Else sets of hydros start from 100 quid ie Deore in some places. Nice and easy to fit, pre bled.0 -
front pads are ok, lots of wear, not contamination.
i'm presuming you have to change the position of the brakes if you increase the size of rotor?0 -
Yeah, the caliper is shifted out with a new adaptor, readily available from bikes shops for a few quid.0

If you do decide to move to hydraulic you could save a few quid by just changing the front brake, sounds like you don't have any trouble with the back at the moment.0
