I have come to a point in my life that I can't quite figure out.I think Im bored of mountain biking, ive lost the buzz for my main hobbie.Has any body else ever felt this and what did you do?
Ive spent most of my time the last while on my commuting hybrid than my mountainbike. The last few rides on my MTB ive asked my self ,"did I enjoy that".
What can I do to get the buzz back or have I just out grown it,I have been MTBing for over 15years.I have to admit Ive been slowly getting away from all the advertising hype not buying magazines and the like, and I feel the sport has become over commercialized.

But that is my own personal view.

    Time for slippers/pipe/road bike maybe?
I felt the same way about 5 years back and sold everything off regretably. My advice as a quiter is just take a time out break for a while, read the paper, walk the dog and buy the wife a new mtb, you'll soon want to hit the trails again ;) even if just for the escape time.
If you cant race it, and you can't take it to bed, what is the point?

I had the same over the Winter but more from being sick of getting filthy and having stuff break/wear out too quickly.

Now it's dry I'm loving it again.

Could try a road bike? Recently got one and it's lots of fun - but in a very different way.

Its Perfectly normal for a hobby to grow old. Once youve "been there and done that" sometimes it looses its spark and it really is time to perhaps try something a little different. You only live once, you should try some other sports and hobbies before its too late. I quite fancy paragluiding of wind surfing at some point, but for now the bikes giving me enough fun and excersize.

It was the commuting by bike that killed my interest in mtbing last time round, I spent so many mornings coming out the house in all weathers for the ride to work that come the weekend i just didn't want to ride, So i stopped riding altogether for a couple of years, also a change of job meant no more riding to work, Then i started to get the bug again and i'm loving it now.
My Rides......91 GT Talera SingleSpeed, 97 Klein pulse race, 2010 Boardman HT Pro

Good to do other stuff too - my interests go in cycles (pardon the pun) - sometimes I'm running mad, then I can't get enough surfing in, then it's cycling. But always keep the others going - never stop them altogether.

Seriously. I can't wait to get more confident and able to get some air and start doing some crazy stuff. The trouble is I have no idea where to begin

    New trails, new routes.
    Do old routes backwards.
    Start racing.
Find a club, or start one yourself.
    Do different types of riding.
    Ride at night.

    Hi all,
Thanks for the replies,Ive rode most good places there are to ride in the UK,my local trails are so varied that you can ride a different route most days,so I can't see that being a problem.Maybe its time to try something else, might try some fell running, always wanted to get into that.Im looking into getting a set of skinny tyres on my trek fx and doing some serious road miles.
But Im going to lay of the MTB for a good while might even sell it.

I hear what you're saying there! I've had to cut down my commuting to work on the bike days and it has helped with my motivation at weekends. Variety is always the key for me, vary the routes and the disciplines and I've found riding for the fun of it rather than a specific reason has helped

How about arranging a ride with people with whom you've never rideen with before? i strated riding with differenet people a few years back and reinvigourated my love for MTB'ing.

2 weeks off doing whatever you want then put it in the diary to get back on again and see how you feel! Trick I read about in a training manual when racers start feeling apathetic towards their riding :)

And yes, road bikes are a different experience.

Yep i have certainly been there but in reverse, i'm addicted to mtb at the moment. I climbed for about 20yrs, but finaly got bored with the climbing i was doing, due to a young family, even when i was climbing it was all about doing something fresh, you go through phases with all interests, its about mixing it up.

In a normal climbing year you would spend the winter, climbing in Scotland, the spring cragging, the summer on the mountain cliffs and somewhere abroad doing Alpine routes and the autumn bouldering, you just have to change the focus to keep interested.

With the biking now to keep motivated it's a case of when the weather permits getting out on big rides in the hills, if the weather is iffy maybe a trail center, in winter hit the local woods, work on technical skills, hit the jumps, new experiences are what makes us tick , when it becomes stale it's time for a change of scenary, that way you feel the progression as you improve so the motivation is there, certainly for me anyway in this latest reincarnation.

Try a different facet of biking or find a new interest is my advice.

i know this feeling, the commute to and from work everyday of the working week.

the crappy weather no enthusiasum at week ends.

bored of the same bike same trails same people..

i was feeling the same way a few moths ago then in may my long awaited hol came (whistler) now if that place can't pick you up nothing will,,

riding amazing new trails with new people even some coaching along the way to improve those skills,,,
now i look forward to my riding again..

give yourself something to look forward to.. like a cycling hol or enter a race if that floats your boat.

Have a break from it. Go and do something else. You'll either come back to it or give it up for good.

I had exactly the same feeling about a year ago. Just didn't ride for 3 or so weeks, then got back into it with addiction! They say that variety is the spice of life, so get out there, explore and mess around. Go scare your self sh*tless, then you're buzzing and its like the best feeling ever when you nail a trail at speed, and avoid some nasty crashes.
