i find i am enjoying my road bike more and more at the moment and am thinking i might sell a mountain bike to fund a new road machine.

thing is, my 09 allez triple is lovely to ride, feels very swift, looks cool (i know it shouldnt matter but it does to me) so apart from lighter weight why should i buy a pricier bike?

am i gonna find a more expensive bike more face down bum up and uncomfortable or can you buy an expensive lightweight bike which stil lets me spend a couple of hours in the saddle?

i normally think more money = better bike but in the case of road bikes will more money = an unsuitable bike.

ps, im looking at spending around 1500 quid (i appreciate this isnt expensive to alot of folk but for 9 pipes bonded together and no suspension, its a flaming fortune to me!!)

I still havnt ordered my Ribble Sportive. Was going to last night but I am waiting to get some money that I am owed.
For less than £1500 you can get it with Ultegra SL Groupset, Mavic Kysrium Equip Wheels and Pro Race 3 tyres. You might even be able to pimp up the rest of the finishing kit.
Definately for me its the one to get....... :D:D:D:D

More money != less comfort- look at Spesh's Roubaix range for a prime example. Should be plenty of more sportive-oriented bikes in your range, which usually translates to a less aggressive position and more of a focus on all-day comfort.

Edit: more money doesn't necessarily equal less comfort, I should have said :)

hmm, this is exactly what i was expecting, so is there a top price pont for good bikes which are still comfortable to ride about? im never going to be a racer but i do like to go fast.

sorry if this is all a bit vague, basicly i want to buy the best bike i can without ending up with something inapropriate, im under the impression the most pricey bikes are very focused on speed as opposed to comfort.

    Hi

Picked up my Ribble Sportive on Friday and took it out for quick 20 yesterday - it didn't dissapoint.
Went for Campg carbon centaur and sciroccoo wheels then pimped it up with red C2 sddle and red/black Pro3 race tyres. Looks great andmore importantly rides great all for 100 less than your budget.
    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Sheepsteeth,

How may miles do you plan to cover?

wrote of my alu / carbon race geometry bike, and had the groupset, finishing kit, wheelset built onto the same manufacturers sportive model, but in carbon (about £1500 as a bike with 105).

As I rarely cover more than 35 miles in a single outing, I can detect the difference in the sportive's comfort (some of that is probably full carbon), although in some aspects I do miss the aggressiveness of the race geometry, and the speed (maybe due to the racier postion and subjectivity).

I would not think twice about buying a race gemoetry bike again, and at the kind of price you are talking about, you should be able to get something that is comfortable and fast (whatever geometry you choose)

at the mo the most i do is about 30 miles, the most i used to do was about 75 in one go but i stopped road riding for about a year really so am building back up.

i like the look of that ribble, its ace, ive been looking at some of focus offerings too which seem good value for money.

my best bet is probs pick a short list, come back and ask for further advice.

ps i really like the looks of the ribble!
