I crashed :(

So I was coming along Embankment as I often do of an eve. Happily racing some other roadies and then it all got rather slow due to a traffic jam. Lots of people hopped up onto the pavement as they always seem to there.

Hah! I thought... Why can they not cycle safely on the road like me?

I was overtaking down the middle, gridlock on the left and empty road on the right. Just as I reach him a black cab indiciates and pulls out to turn around. Wham. One buckled wheel and what I imagine was a rather impressive face plant later, I am lifting my bike back up and wobbling to the pavement. Bit shaken and rather more blood on my face than when I began, but otherwise ok.

To his credit the driver was very apologetic, gave me a lift all the way home and is paying for all repairs.

Note to self - Be careful!!! Pretty happy to have only surface wounds!

You don't think you should get to a hospital to get a 'proper' checkup?

Sorry to read about it, but you must ensure you get checked out

    Take care.

I had an incident today as well... riding along as normal, reached a pedestrianised area with one of those bollards that retract into the road to only let authorised vehicles through. Ahead I saw a smashed up car that had obvously crashed into the barrier with what I thought was water on the floor. Thinking nothing of it I continue on my way but when I went over what i'd thought was water it turned out to be oil that had leaked out of the smashed car. Needless to say the bike whipped out from under me, I landed hard on my left hand and broke my wrist. Went to hospital and they confirmed it and stuck a cast on me for the next 6 weeks. That's my second bike related trip to hospital in as many months. The girlfriend is trying to ban me from riding and to be honest I'm thinking of sacking the whole bike thing off :'(

Yeah, if you hit your head/face, it's worth a check over.

The traffic's a bugger down along there.
    FCN 2-4.

"What happens when the hammer goes down, kids?"
    "It stays down, Daddy."
    "Exactly."
  • Sorry to hear about the crash!

You must have found the only nice cab driver in London though, unless he charged you for the trip home?

Parts of the pavement along the embankment are mixed use, although I think it's mostly along towards Chelsea that that's the case.

Hope you have a speedy recovery.

NO!! Not allowed to quit! I'm hoping you'll come round to thinking that you want to be back on the bike sooner or later :-)

But in anycase, I'm sorry to hear of your misfortune there, and to pangolin.

You must go and see a doctor or at the very least the walk in center. The thing is if something ends up going wrong with a part of your body you wont be able to claim for damages off the guy's insurance.

Dont give up, especially if you enjoy it and it helps you keep you fit.

Nasty. Sorry to hear about that.

And I'll note the caution, I have caught myself filtering with sometimes a bit too much "enthusiasm" along there.

Enthusiastic filtering is a good way to put it.

Well, took the bike to Evans today and it needs both wheels replacing (thought it might) plus new chain and cassette... £436! Still, I spoke to the taxi driver and he is happy to pay.

Got to wait until Friday evening to pick it up though. It's gonna be a slow commute in on my mountain bike till then. FCN up from 5 to 11 so could be some good scalping.
