Firefox on Ubuntu.
My eeePC has removed firefox from itself. I have no idea what to do about this. I believe it's on Ubuntu.
Serves me right for buying an OS I know nothing about...
Standard-issue - what came on it before they shipped them with Windows. It's a little crazy, and I have no idea how to fix it!
It should have a package manger i'm fairly sure it's fairly stock linux distro with a facejob as you where.
package manger is what most distros use for installing programs.
Roger, you're making even less sense than usual!!
However, this time it's partly my fault because I don't know what a package manager or a distro is, or what 'as you where' means.0 -
@RM - These dumbed down distro's that come on the netbooks usually try and hide the fun things like package managers and even the command line from the general public.
I know I had great fun enabling access to the package manager on my mum's Acer Aspire One.
Ubuntu Netbook Remix is worth a punt, it comes with an excellent GUI frontend that looks great on the small screens.
@LiT: You can try following this guide: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:installfirefox3 looks like it will get a version of FF back on. Note the disclaimer but I guess as you don't have a browser you don't have much to lose ;-)0 -
Thanks BJUK... I'll put it on a memory stick or something as I am completely browser-less ATM and have no idea how to get to the site!!0

okay linux systems tend to be packaged up into "distros" Ubuntu is the present hot one of theses was others such as Red Hat before that.
as installing on linux is bit of pain in the rear. a system that could collect and then install applications (and remove) was invented a while back. they are called Package Mangers.
Package Manger is close to the add/remove system on windows.
any how what you have is this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xandros_Linux
by looks of things the package manger is locked down. which begs the question are you sure you've removed firefox? or just a link manybe?0 -
I don't know what I've done... I tried to update it as it asked me to and now it's disappeared... I'm going to try to activate advanced desktop and see if I can find it that way. Opera's on there somewhere too...0

it's for that reason precisely that if/when I get a netbook the first thing I'll be doing is putting Ubuntu NBR on, I'd prefer to have a proper distro that I can customize on there as opposed to some horrid hacked one that wraps you in cotton wool. Don't get me wrong the OS that most of the netbooks come with are ideal for those less computer literate users as it shields them from the mucky side of things but I've acquired quite a liking for tinkering under the hood since ditching MS.In a world without walls and fences who needs Windows and Gates?
@LiT - Sounds like an automatic software update has been performed on Firefox and it's probably broken or removed the shortcut. Might be worth checking if you have any kind of system or live update (like Windows Update) program in the Settings area as this might fix it?0 -

That little updater thing is what broke it in the first place... grumble... Opera broke itself with its own updater, and Firefox asked me to go to the updater in settings to break it.
I bet they're both hiding somewhere, laughing at me...0 -

sounds like maybe getting a less crippled system might be a good idea in the long/middle term either a normal linux distro or xp etc.0 -

As with most issues like this it appears your not the first person it's happened to!
Indeed! Thanks for that... It's a bit techy, but I'm sure I'll figure it out. Or, BJUK, do you want to do some freelance geeking for me? I'll pay you heap big money!
I like my little eeePC...0 -
I'm trying to imagine how much luck people have when they ask for help adjusting their rear derailleur's indexing on a linux forum.
I'm thinking not much.0 -

I'm thinking not much.
I think if someone asked on the Ubuntu Forums (not that I visit them much..........) then I'd offer some help but I think those people that use Linux have slightly better googling skills then the general populous ;-)0 -

I can't thank you enough for posting this!! At work, I support users who use a web app to access a database, and the ones who are running IE8 were having problems. Now I can offer them a solution that doesn't involve downgrading to IE7.
I left work early on Friday to ride my bike, and was going to make the time up this morning. Now I can go ride my bike this morning too And I thought that all the time I spend browsing bike websites was wasted....0
