which bike is best

hi all i am looking at buying a hardtail mountain bike im new to mountain biking and want something for on the road with the kids and for some off roading at weekends around the lakes,local woods and dirt tracks.
i have been looking at a few bikes which is best.

1. diamondback responce 09
2.carrera fury 09
3.giant xtc 4 09
4.gt aggressor 1 09

any other bikes around the £500 mark i should take a look at i am going for a 18" frame any help or advice would be great. thanks

    You could get the Giant XTC 3 for £550 which has a better spec than the XTC 4, especially the forks.

    The XTC 3 above is a nice bike if you can stretch to it. Quite like the Carrera Fury myself, great spec for the price. You should try to get a test spin though. Are they all in your local Halfords? The XTC 4 will have the same frame as the 3 so you could take a sneaky test spin there if you're thinking of buying it online :D
