Mud Guards, are they worth it?

For people who ride all year around, mudguards are a must have.
For people who only ride when its sunny, you dont need them.Whatever you do don't get moto style ones ala Topeak Defenders. I let my LBS sell me a pair of those when I bought my bike. First actual real bump and the fork brace chopped the front guard bracket in half. Might be fine on longer travel bikes I guess though.
I was using those with a recon fork, and they worked perfectly. Never had a single problem.0 -

Easy enough to adapt the spacer or make your own, if you do want one... Or use a star nut and a long bolt.Uncompromising extremist0 -

tosh, tish and piffle. 312 days ridden in sunny lancashire last year. No guards. I agree they might be a 'nice to have' for some people, but they're most definitely not a 'must have'.0 -

My demo X1 from Giant had what looked like a standard crud catcher half way up the downtube, seemed to work fine....thinking of emailing them to find out what model it was they had fitted .

does anyone use the marzocchi fenders that fit on the underside of the crown on marz forks? tempted by one of them for this winter so any opinions welcomed, maybe even coupled with the old crudcatcher a bit further down the tube than normal for full splatter resistance!0
