I didn't know you can now get it again! Or did it never stop? Just found it in the local supermarket!

Will update as to the terribleness of it, but I used to LOVE this when I was wee. 8)

Must try and find some Ice Magic now!

Friend pulled one out of the freezer last year iirc. 5 or 6 30 somethings celebrate the surprise return of a childhood treasure with stories of who loved it the most when we were kids, but who had such ambrosia the least as we were all working class and such luxuries werent afforded at a whim. That was wedding cake when I was a kid  .

its lost its "is there any more Mum" appeal completely Im afraid, retro doesnt always work. We didnt have any Ice Magic though :(

    Well...

I don't remember the pastry bit round the outside being so thin! Apart from that it was okay - the jam is niceer than I remember anyway, and the ice cream isn't obviously the yellow hydrogenated fat flavoured stuff. All in all, a solid six out of ten.

Had one other night it was okay. Unfortunately it was totally outclassed by the Caramel and Cinnamon Carte Dor creation wed had the previous night.

When I was young and a student I used to work in the Birds Eye factory in Eastbourne making........ Artic Roll!! The whole area around the factory used to smell of it making visitors to the town curious and hungry. A bit like when Mackintosh's were in Norwich making chocolate and the whole city smelt of it.

Arctic roll and hot custard, you have to eat it quick, but pure ambrosia. Almost as nice as fruitcake and custard all mashed up, I'm hungry now.

Fondant Fancies never went away. But the ones from Betty's teashops are far superior to the pre-packaged equivalents!

Most of the north side of York still has this appealing characteristic - courtesy of Nestle - when the wind's blowing the right way! The niff from the British Sugar plant (which seemed to permeate the whole city during the autumn) was not so pleasant, though.

    Relax. Breathe in. Breathe out.

    Now, limber up with:

    "settee" & swirly carpets

    vol-au-vents

    old spice

brown tiles - avocado bathroom suite

    and now enjoy:

    Vienetta

    ahhhhhh: feel the memory[/u]

So much nostalgia to celebrate there - anyone fancy cracking open a Party Seven [1]?

    And whilst we're on th subject of avocado bathrooms (I used to have one!) - as with so many of my posts, link to the inevitable M&W sketch posted below;

I'd rather crack open a can of Tab if that's OK? Or maybe a Cresta (It's frothy man!).
(A bear is talking to farm animals)
Bear: Do you know what all the bears up at the North Pole drink when they’re thirsty? It’s the sea man — the Arctic Ocean!
Now me, I’m really into this frothy Cresta — like this strawberry flavour.
(Cows moo and chickens cluck etc.)
The day they start making the Arctic Ocean in strawberry is the only day this young bear’s going to drink it!
Voice-over: Cresta in five fruity flavours.
    Bear: It’s frothy man!

Damn this nostalgia thread! Now I want some Angel Delight and my childhood back. Waaaaaaaaaa....!

Just say NO! to Old English Spangles. Crystalised dog turds, as I recall.

    Calm down, dear!

    </M. Winner>

Don't panic, Instant Whip/Angel Delight-style packet desserts are still to be had from any good supermarket. As are plenty of childhood-invoking pre-packaged Kipling-ish cakes (mmmm.....Battenberg..... :) )!
But as for Stewie G.'s mention of Bird's Ice Magic - whatever did happen to that stuff?

I used to play in a band that had a gig on a thursday night and we had to drive past the United biscuits factory in longsight on the way there at about 7pm when they were doing the evening baking... it was purgatory knowing you couldn't sate the smell

My mates Dad used to work in McVities in Park Royal when we were kids. Apparently on your first day of working there you are told that you can eat whatever you want  . So everyone feasts on jaffa cakes and chocolate hob nobs. By all accounts it doesnt take long before you decide that you never want to eat another one again

Findus Crispy Pancakes, chips and beans.

Crap cola in the Soda stream

Then goin out to play on my Raleigh Strika with it's immense fake suspension on the front. (Where I lived you either had a Strika or a Boxer, the bigger boys had Grifters. I never graduated to a Grifter I went straight for the kill with a Kuwahara BMX!)

I remember riding my mates Strika, we had tied a bit of rope to the middle of the bar on the handlebars and he was running along pulling me. All of a sudden the rope slid out toward the end and I thought oh bum, please dont pull the rope now. Which of course he promptly did. Handlebars turned 90 degrees and stabbed me in the chest as I pivoted over the handle bars and face planted

Then I had a Grifter and I remember thinking I wonder if I can ride with my arms crossed. Bike slowly started to drift right, so, naturally I pulled my left hand back a touch, oh dear this is getting worse now. Tried to grab the brakes but my fingers couldnt reach for obvious arms crossed over reasons, smash, straight into our neighbours car. I also remember standing up on my Grifter and getting "slip gear" WHAMMO" straight down on to the top tube, left foot came off the pedal and got dragged underneath dragging me harder down onto the top tube. Stopped and was recovering when I heard my mates Mum "oh my goodness are you OK"? Yes Mrs Richards I squeaked in my new Farinelli tone. :(
