Deore XT rear mech on an 8 speed?

One of my mates with more money than sense is offering me an XT rear mech for free (he has just upgraded to XTR) to replace my broken Alivio. I have 8 speed cassette and 8 speed shifters; although the XT is meant for a 9 speed, will it still work, or am I going to have to buy an 8 speed specific deraileur?

Any help would be appreciated.

    The mech is dumb, as long as the shifters match the cassette in the number of gears then you'll be OK.
    I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    I've got a 9 speed deore LX on a 7 speed cassette, no problems, just set the inward movement limiter screw and it will be fine
