Hi Guys,

My shimano chain recently snapped on a number of occassions so thought it was best to just replace it. Having read reviews i opted for a PC850 Sram chain as seem to be stronger. I m running 8 speed (shimano cassette) & have just fitted the chain however the chain slips or jumps in speed 8. I m wondering if its the chain or is my 12 toothed 8 speed gear worn ? should i just buy a shimano chain ?

thanks

Matt

    sounds like a worn cassette.

err no. there is no difference. (as long as your cassette and chain are the same speed).

    Like i said worn cassette.

The IG70 chain i was running yesterday was fine. Today a new chain & there is problems. Both are 8 speed.

I just changed gear 8 & it still slipped you cant question that.

Is the chain length correct? There shouldn't be an incompatibility in the chain itself so it's worth looking at other factors.

the chain is the correct lengths, infact its longer than the chain that was on, the old one was tight i was running out of links hence the replacement & riliability.

Does the IG not indicate a different type of chain, i thought HG was the lastest type.

I had a new chain on my EX8 last week and it slipped right away. The cassette is worn - not worn out, but worn to suit the old chain, which didn`t slip at all. New cassette - simples

  • Shouldnt matter mate I run a sram chain on shimano cassette, shimano cranks and shimano derailleur with no probs but im due for a drivetrain replacement and im going down the shimano slx cassette with shimano chain and shimano middle chainwheel with some new jockey wheels route but thats just me i love shimano stuff its always been so reliable, however i will still be using a sram power link in the chain

i didnt realise you could use the powerlink in a shimano chain. Will have a look round see what looks good.

SRAM do (or at least did) say that the powerlink was not for use with Shimano chains, but there's certainly reports of people using them (obviously, given geordiefreerider's post) with no problems.

I replaced worn original chain after 1700 miles on a SRAM 8 speed cassette with a new SRAM 8 speed chain. As original post, new chain jumped teeth on gear 8, and couldn't adjust out. Close inspection of gear 8 showed two shark fin shaped teeth. Obviously worn/stretched teeth caused this, and new chain rollers wouldn't fit cleanly into this sprocket. Clearly fewer teeth on small sprocket running at higher speed increases wear on teeth. LBS changed the one gear for £7. Bargain.
Oh and I use SRAM silver powerlink on this, and in response to above, a SRAM gold powerlink on the Shimano chain on 9 speed cassette on GT Avalanche 1. No issues yet.

i always thought there was comptibility issues between shimanos HG & IG chains.
