Hi all, I have just bought a 2009 Trek 1.7 Compact as my first entry level road bike and was just wondering if anyone had any advice on good ways to spend money upgrading any of it's part/components over the next couple of years when I have any spare cash to spend on it. e.g better wheels, chainset, etc etc. Thanks.

Tyres are normally a good first upgrade, followed by wheels. A pair of ProRace 3's would be a good start.Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0

I have a 1.7, upgraded first the wheels as the SSR's are shocking !. Flex, heavy - look cool but are bad !. Then tyres - ContI GP4000S
Seat is nice but too much padding and therefore too heavy - now specialized TOUPE.
Seatpost is carbon but take a look at the clamp - it's massive. Any weight loss through carbon will be lost due to the size of that clamp - now specialized PACT post.
I had a compact and needed slightly higher gear for hills - loads around here so went from 12-23 to 12-25, enough for my hills as didnt want extra weight of a triple.
Just recently changed bars and stem as Bontrager select are ok but heavy.
All in all, should have bought a new bike ha ha ha'We go up we go down, this is bull sh*t yar'0 -
Hi - and welcome to the forum:
Tyres as said are a good place to start - Open Corsa CX's, Pro Race 3's, GP4000 S, Diamante Pros - all good Spring/Summer tyres.
Then - onto Wheels - if you've got the budget, a good set of all-rounder wheels will make a nice upgrade - some candidates
RS80's
Kysrium SL's
Easton EA90's
For a cheaper option, Racing 5 Evo's or the EA50 SL's or EA70's for a bit more.0 -
