Don't be silly. Imagine the scenario:

Shop worker: You see, this 20 speed bike only actually gives you around 13 distinct ratios
Customer: So why am I paying so much? That bike has 14 gears and is half the price! I'll take that one instead.
    Shop worker: No, you see...
Customer: You're just trying to make me spend more for no reason. My mind's made up.

    Fully agree

You can see why so many bike shops recommend hybrids .
    Customer : I want a bike
Shop worker: What kind of cyclist are you ? Road or off-road ?
Customer : 'Bit of both' or 'Dunno'
Shop worker: So buy a hybrid - 2 bikes for the price of one !
Customer : What other choice do I have ?
Shop worker: Buy a proper road bike
    Customer : No - My mind's made up . I want a hybrid

    Or maybe:
Customer: I want a bike, with flat bars 'cos I'm not keen on drops
Shop: what sort of riding do you do? On or off road?
C: mostly road, really, needs to be nippy but safe in traffic, good view and that
    S: hybrid it is, then

FYI: I also 'do' drops - on what used to be known as a 'sports' bike but now would be audax-styleee

Nothing wrong with hybrids, they get people on bikes...

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Drop bars aren't safe in traffic and don't give you a good view of the road (back of the bus in front of you)? I learn something new every day. I guess I'm lucky I don't have much traffic on my commute.

Whatever words might come out, the conversation is more likely along these lines:

    Customer: I want a r...

BS: Doesn't matter what you want. We're going to sell you a hybrid.

    Cust: No. I want...

Bs: Tough. We'll sell you something you don't really want, then you can come back next year and buy another bike off us. Probably a road bike, but not the one you really want. You can buy what you actually want the year after that. Come on. Cough up for the hybrid. Now.
