Hi,

My new bile (focus black forest) came with Tektro Auriga Comp brakes, but they just don`t seem to offer much stopping power. e.g I can`t do endos or stoppies. Are they just not very good brakes or is there something i can do to improve them? maybe a larger rotor or better pads?

thanks,
G

  • It takes a little while for the pads to 'bed' in, how long have you had the bike?

    Hi.
Ive got Auriga comps with 160mm rotors front and back.
Have very good stopping power. Have had to bleed them a couple of times mind you.
Put it this way, if I grabbed a fist full of front brake it would easily send me over the bars.

How long have you had the bike?
Have the pads been fully bedded in?
Any contamination (oil etc) on pads or rotors?
Does the brake lever action feel firm or soft?
Why has my sig been removed by the admins???

Pads should have bedded in by now, rotors look clean and are the same size as yours. The levers feels pretty firm. There is no danger of me going over the handle bars :(

Is there anyway to adjust the nearest of the pads like with cable disc brakes?

    thanks for your help!

Just had a look at mine. The gap between rotor and pads on mine is about 0.5 - 1 mm, on each side of the rotor.

Are your rotors centred between the pads?

doh! i think that`s it, the front brake has quite a bit more space on one side.

Might be the reason! If you pull the brake does it 'bend' the rotor? ie, one pad is touching the rotor first?

Maybe release the caliper mounting bolts, pull the brake to centre the caliper, then tighten the bolts up again.

My rear Auriga Comps are fantastic but the front ones are pants...

The Pads keep glazing over, even after rubbing them and the disc with some sandpaper.....

Not as sharp as they used to be - think I'll need to check the disc for mis alignment.....
But I dont know if they need bled - not done that since I got them, 6 months ago.....

Auriga Comps are usually the other way round, loads of stop but not a great deal of modulation. It does sound like a setup issue, it could also be that they need a bleed (they're a bit of a pain to bleed). Or it could be manked up pads of course. But if you grab a handful of that little bendy lever it should leave you picking trail out of your teeth

if they are new you should not have to bleed them right?

I wouldn't expect them to need bleeding if they are relatively new .... thats my thoughts on the matter, but they aren't a patch on my mates juicy 5's -

The pads on mine when you squeeze the brake just seem to slip a little on the rotor and make a sqeeeching noise...... sounds a bit like a moose actually :P

I had to bleed mine after a couple of weeks after overheating them.

That's probably what's causing it then, sounds like they're not setup properly.

I have the same bike/brakes and the front brake is insane, actually dangerous!
My rear brake isn't as good anymore but that's because I accidentally got lubricant all over it. :(

Have you tried a disc break cleaner? should get most things off, or do you mean the pads?

thanks for everyone`s help, my brake is still not as powerful as i guess it should be, maybe i will have to take it to my lbs. I guess this is the problem buying from wiggle :(

I've got Tektro Auriga Comp 180mm rotor on the front 160mm rear and can lock both brakes sometimes at once when overentusiatic  should be amble if somewhat harsh if they are working properly set up and working, in all but extreme riding.
