Snapped mech!

On the way down Millbank I saw this poor roadie dude walking along the pavement with his bike slung over his shoulder. I stopped to see if I could help get him mobile again, turned out a piece of plastic somehow got tangled up in his rear mech causing it to literally snap itself off the hanger!

I've never seen anything like this before. Anyhow the poor dude seemed to be taking it well, and turned down my offer for a get-you-home fix over walking (off the frustration, I suspect).

I saw a guy toiling up a long hill in Edinburgh today at about 50 rpm. All over the bike like a rash.

Bet he wished he had gears. :P

Had a new one a couple of weeks back: girl was stopped on the NKR, rear wheel not running free. A plastic bag (the sort you put fruit in at the supermarket) had become wrapped around the lower jockey wheel on the rear mech. Ended up having to remove the jockey wheel to emove the bag!
    FCN 2-4.

"What happens when the hammer goes down, kids?"
    "It stays down, Daddy."
    "Exactly."
  • He should have been skate board biking it home...

Happened to me once - broken spoke took out the rear mech, bent the (steel) gear hanger, all this whilst crossing a junction.

    Not nice.

And I was overtaken by a twerp on a foldie who didn't offer help.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

    Plastic bags are EVIL.
