Hi there I'm in the middle of building a jump bike and want to run a rear mech with a medium cage (9 gears on the rear HG and single sprocket 36t on front) but can only find a rear shimano mech which will do upto 35t on the front and 34-32t to 11t on rear so you think it will be ok to run this mech (medium cage) with a 36t front sprocket?

Cage length
Excuse the cut and paste but it saves me explaining.
Cage length determines the capacity of a derailleur to take up chain slack. Cage length determines the total capacity of the derailleur, that is the size difference between the largest and smallest chainrings, and the size difference between the largest and smallest sprockets on the cogset added together. A larger sum requires a longer cage length. Typical cross country mountain bikes with three front chainrings will use a long cage rear derailleur. A road bike with two front chainrings and closely spaced (in terms of teeth number) sprockets will function with either a short cage derailleur or a long cage one, but work optimally with a short cage.
Bang the rear mech on. It`ll work....the system......you can`t beat it.0 -

just buy any med/short rear mech and you will be fine.
have a look in the FAQs."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
