Non-sports drinking of sports drinks

Bit of a mouthful I know.

Something I have noticed in recent years is the trend for people to treat sports drinks as soft drinks. We sell them at work in the form of Powerade and lucozade. They get guzzled down all year around. I have even been in the local super market and seen mothers buying a pack of 6 for their kid (I've seen them buying redbull too which is even worse imo). Gatorade is super popular down here too.

My understanding is that these drinks are designed to replace the lost salts and minerals when you sweat as part of your exercise. Makes me wonder what damage is being done the way I see some use these. You just know they've not done exercise for a number of years in the majority.

Obviously, you can sweat a lot with a PS3 controller in your hands . . . .

But then how many times have you seen unathletic people wearing sportswear?

it's not a pretty sight is it?

It's a shame they don't even do it ironically.

Making a cup of coffee is like making love to a beautiful woman. It's got to be hot. You've got to take your time. You've got to stir... gently and firmly. You've got to grind your beans until they squeak.
And then you put in the milk.

I guess (and it is a guess) that people think 'sporty drink' - energy giving and maybe even healthy. The fact they aren't doing anything sporty (except wii) passes them by.

I struggle drinking that sort of cr*p even when I'm on a 80 miler - tastes horrible.

As for shell suits, I can't even start to guess.

Would i ever drink lucazade sport when doing sport - No

Would i drink lucazade sport when hungover or coming down - Yes. It's sweet and savory and importanly not fizzy- and available at 24 hour garages.

(of course i have a tertiary education, so i'm proablably doing it ironically)

If I could afford that high 5 stuff I'd drink that all the time. I'd do the same for recovery bars they taste nice, same for the energy bars and gels.

That would be a massive amount of excess calories mind you!

How about a different angle. I work in a shop with is next door to a pizzeria. Quite often we get bloaters in with about 4 pizza boxes, go round the shop and pick up crisps, chocolate etc. However, once they get to the drinks fridge, there seems to occur some massive moral dilemma where by they can't choose in between coke or diet coke. FFS people, you've got a stack of pizzas a foot high, buy the bloody full fat coke and be done with it. And here's twenty lamberts while you're at it, finish the night off.

I've got to be honest here. I only drink the diet cola (pepsimax) because its the only one I like the taste of. :? The others either taste of fizzy water or sugar.

I'm a proper pig when it comes to grub. I think I'd be much heavier if it wasnt for cycling.

Only drink lucozade sport when i've run out of Robinsons in my bottles. which is quite a lot on 2 days of mountain biking or hiking.

Tried to drink it when not doing sport once, never again.

Not mad keen on sports drinks, they all seem to taste of boiled sweets to me - much prefer squash or barley water when out on the bike or otherwise (incidentally, I presume you mean the soft drinks variety of Robinsons, not the Stockport version  ).
As for Lucozade, rarely touch it though I always seemed to be bought the stuff when ill as a kid!

I used to belong to a gym in Hove where the local GPs sent obese people to make them lose weight (it certainly made me feel good - I looked like Dolph Lundgren compared to most of them).

Anyhoo, I would regularly see these two ladies who looked like they'd escaped from a seaside postcard - big girls the both of them. First stop was the magazine rack, second the fizzy pop machine. They would then spend 30 minutes reading, chatting and drinking Lucozade whilst turning the pedals at glacial speed.

    A treat to see.... :D

My Brother's mate was like that in a body building gym (except he wasnt obese - he was normal size). His Father had sent him there to "toughen him up" so to speak. Oneday he came around here and me Brother told me that this big fella had been telling him off for it. "I never see you" and "in a sweat" were mentioned.

In the big body building gyms round here, the only reason they're sweating anyway is because they've got the charge wrong
