Heya all,

While surfing an online site that does auctions I came across a racing bike, looking nearly new I just knew I had to have it and take it for a ride. I can't find anyting at all about this kind of model online and wondered if any of you guys could help me out here.

It's a model called a Philips Phantom and it's running with three-gears.
Heres an small photo of her!

Could anyone put me in the right direction with regards to older or vintage road racing style bikes? is their a market?

I personally love collecting things and I'm going to give this a good clean over take her for a spin, fiddle with her again and then hang her in my living room from the celing as it's beter looking then that cheap Ikea painting I've got up there...

Kind regards,
Major Payne

I'm a major payne in the rear an so's my saddle! Gotta love the local bike, innit!

    Heya matey,

Thanks for popping past, I've been loooking and looooking for information about this bike for the best part of two days and I can't find anything substantial on the matter well other then their near the bottom of the collection range but for me she's lovely!!

I'm picking her up at the weekend and then she's going to get a good going over piece by piece and then put back together and taken for a steady jolt around the town I live in, I love old things and collecting / maintaining is something I really enjoy so it's a nice way for me to start-up a small collection.

I'm sure she's going to be fun to ride and very retro in my mind, I'll look after her very well.
And not a bad price for £30 maybe it's something I could hand down to my children when I get around to having some ;)

And she's the complete opposite of my racing red carerra so an even better arrangement there :) I'll get more and better quality images up during the weekend clean :)

-You've some nice images on flicker mate, really nice!!

    Kind regards,
    MajorPayne

    Thanks

I'd be interested to see more pictures. £30 was a nice price, bargain! I had a bit of a look on the web, couldn't find anything.

Cool innit really, something that's rare to google or the web is either complete junk or something to be well discovered, I'm banking on the discovered part of the adventure!

My partners brother is currently living in the town I've purchased it from and he's been more then helpful in the past with parts and advice and has offered to pay and pick-it up for me too.
So I should have it hopefully earlier then I expected and then I'll give him the money I owe him for the bike!

Also while we're at his house with the bike I assume I could talk him into giving it a good overhaul and clean out in the garage, so that should be fun too I'm defiantly going to go out riding on her and see how she handles compared to my ALU modern racing bike.

Can't wait to get some high-res images up and online and studying more about the bike itself :)
I'm using tinypic.com and I've now an account so I could perhaps give you a direct link after the weekend rather then downsizing the images and putting them bikeradar and wasting everyone bandwidth eh!

    All the best mate,
    Kind regards,
    MajorPayne

    Heya Stix,

Out of interest and me pondering thoughts could I ask a silly question or two regarding the gearing system of a bike like this? If you will allow me to waffle on a bit as I'm not sure about how to come to the point with the proper lingo on this subject.

    So here goes:

From looking at the image of the bike and comparing it to my more modern counterpart this is,
if it has three-speeds why no gear shifters like the frame mounted ones on older bikes? this to me denotes that the user never personally selects the gear to run it and that it is like an automatic gear box on a car, when you hit the petrol pedal friction builds up as your driving along with road changes and slips it into either a higher or lower ratio giving you the required power?

or could I be way off and the gearing system switch is hidden elsewhere on the bike of which I cannot see?

Do you know of any sites that would be of use to me in working this out for myself and learning a bit more about how things worked back when gears like these were more commonly used on the roads?

    Kind regards,
    MajorPayne

P.S: Whats the name for a gearing system like this? Drum gears? Friction gears? Am I barking up the wrong tree with all of my questions on the subject and it's a simple as one cog on the back with a number of teeth and the same at the front?

If it's single cog on a thin hub it will be a single speed, if it is a thick hub it will be hub gears with the cable and shifter missing, unless it is a kickback hub where you push the pedals back to change gear. You would need to describe in more detail or have close-up pictures.

Have you figured out the gears yet?

Looks like a hub gear to me. Look at the side where the sprocket is - there should be a little stem coming out, with a hole in it. This is where the control cable should go in. If it appears sealed then I don't really know what it is...
  • Hi there I remember that this bike was made by Raleigh as I had one in the mid 80's. Unfortunatley it got stolen from my sisters but from what I remember it was a great bike.
  • Hi . Sorry this is a late reply, but i thought I would let you know I to have a Phillips Phantom. Mine is red and is a ten speed. I to have tried to find info on this model with out any luck.
The gears on it are really good. the make is Sachs Huret. It would be nice to know if you found out any details on what they are worth as im saving for a nice new carbon frame.
    thanx dave
