V-Brakes Troubles

Hi,
A new women's halfords bike, and we had to fit the wheel as it came boxed.
I didn't know the best way to get the wheel on past the brakes, so I used the allen key to remove the brake cable from the v-brake. When I did that it all sprung apart, and now I'm having trouble getting it back together again!
After a while I've managed to get the brakes to work ok, but they are not straight and I can't work out what I need to do.

This is the bike.
Thanks, Dan
