Hi,
im hoping to upgrade on my origanal square taper setup cranks. I am seriously looking at the shimano deore hollowtech crankset as it looks amazing value for money. is this a good decision? are there any pro's and con's to this crankset? are there any betters for a simalar price?
many thanks

bearings may fail quicker than the square taper, but it'll be stiffer.
LX 580 at Chainreaction is the same price and lighter , but discontinued

thats what i upgraded to from the truvativ cranks that came with my bike as standard. definately worth while - i have had them for about a year now and no problems so far with BB bearings. I usually ride xc, mini-dh and freeride on the bike so its taken its fair share of dodgy landings / falls.

Outer bb's tend to last longer than internal:s
  • cheers guys. looks like the way im going to go. I have seen on chain reaction that a multi instalation tool is only a tenner! probly be getting that too. Whats the importance on getting the shell faced?

crucial if you want the bike to work properly.

take it to your lbs and get it faced properly for a nominal fee. Everyone else does.

never bothered with facing, bearings take their reference from the thread allignment, not the shell face.
LX survived 2 years of mud, sand and lack of maintenance and still going before bike got nicked.

more important to get the bearing load correct.

Get your BB shell faced if you can, although some people have skipped this and had no issues, it will prolong BB life and shimano recommend that you have your frame faced.

With regards to the crank, the Deore HTII is a craking deal, not that weighty and should last a lifetime. That's what i would go for if on a budget.

    Hope this helps.
  • Thanks for the replies.
Im going to get the deore htII cranks from chain reaction, and a fitting tool. In all £70 so not too bad.
How many BB spacers do i need to run and how many on what sides please?
    kind regards max

normally one on the drive side. you wont regret those cranks, ace value for a top quality bit of kit, look good too.

The no. of spacers depends on the shell width of the bb,ie:73 or 68mm.
Mine`s 68mm so 2spacers on the driveside and 1 on the non drive side.
Instructions are in the box or on the shimano website.
Make sure you get this right or your chainline will be out.
Most importantly don`t over tighten the preload,or your bearings will be wrecked in as little as one ride.
I found out the hard way........

  • Okay, Deore ht2 cranks and tools on the way from chain reaction.
Do you mean he preload as in the tension between the two arms?

Yes.you set it with the black plastic preload cap.If you have ever edjusted a headset its the same principle.Only tighten the preload cap, finger tight to eliminate play in the bearings then carefullly tighten the opposing pinch bolts on the non drive crank to secure.
Theres a "how to" on you tube.
