What was that bad boy mounted on? Looks like a small boat of some kind.

I must remember to mount one of these to my handlebars for when I see walkers on the trails

It was on a research vessel that does topographical mapping of the ocean floor using SONAR.

Using my millitary background and supreme knowledge I can certify that the original post isnt actually a gun of any sort. Its a tennis ball launcher!

WTF does that thing shoot? I bet it weighs more than i do.

Where abouts do you live Yeehamcgee?

Apparently, it uses 7.62mm NATO rounds, and it fires 3000 (three THOUSAND!!!!!) rounds per minute!

It was on a naval research ship, which was docked locally for the weekend, allowing people on-board to see it.

They should mod it a bit to launch tennis balls that quick, that'd get murray on his feet :-)

just having a read about the a10s gatling gun, it fires nearly 4000 rounds a minute of 30mm armour defeating rounds, now thats a handy thing to have on call when pinned down by some tanks!!

Could use it to keep pirates at bay!!! Wonder how much it costs to use seeing as it goes through ammo the way it does

Not all that much, actually. It can fire at a rate of 3,000 rounds per minute, but it would most likely melt, or get very VERY hot, and bend if you fired for a length of time. Which is why they are used in short bursts.

Also, the barrels have to be replaced after so many thousands of rounds, as they become quite innaccurate.... It's an area weapon as it is, let alone when it's rifling is worn out too!!!

I thought the whole point of having that many barrels, and rotating them was to stop it overheating?I've definitely seen them being used continuously for minutes at a time on several television shows demonstrating how they can cut a tree down, slice through an engine block and so on.
I mean, 8 barrels works out as 6.25 rounds per second per barrel, and considering they're spinning through air as well, they're going to remain cooler than a standard machine gun barrel.

    Surely?

But regardless, a pirate would have to be pretty stupid to go against one of them things!

It will keep it cooler, and allow a higher rate of fire - the barrels, that is. But the rounds are 30mm!! Thats a BIG lump of metal to be cutting with the rifling! ALOT of friction. Maybe I'm wrong - I'm not an armourer! But either way, serious heat!

Bit of a beast is that! Would NOT like to be on the pointy end!

yeah you are right about the many barrels reducing overheating.

I think they only stop because they run out of ammo to be honest.

Im sure Ive seen liquid cooled gattling guns somewhere too...

Ah, sorry, I thought you meant the baby (normal?!?) one I saw. That thing fires standard 7.62 NATO rounds, apparently.

yeehaamcgee - either way, whatever it fires, and how well it's made is irrelevent on this forum.

I like it, because it looks cool 8)
