dont know if this has been covered.

a mate of mine rides time trail(road), and he suggested polishing my new bike with car polish or furniture polish so that it makes it easier to clean. has anyone done this?

Mr Sheen will do the job you want, gives a lovely shine but also a very slippy, durable surface.

I normally do this every 3 months or so... i use a wax rather than polish as wax tends to leave a better coat of protection. I use a good car wax - same as on my car :)

Would Mr Sheen potentially damage the paint as it's designed for other surfaces?

I have used AutoGlym, but I'll give Mr Sheen a go later. He shines umpteen things clean.

Watch out for the WD40 getting anywhere near your suspension seals though as it can damage the rubber.... be sure if you do use WD40 then as quoted spray on a rag first! ;)

I've heard of furniture polish being the way to go tbh - gonna have a blast with that this evening i thinks!

I suppose it's possible, the usual "test on a small area" applies with pretty much any polish or product, but it's been fine on every painted or coated surface I've ever used it on.

Bike spray also does the job.

  • I use MucOff Miricale Shine. Makes the frame shine like new! Gave it 3 coats to start it off. Nice and shiny!

  • AFTER CHECKING the possible ill-effects of any application on you bikes particular laquered finish(the effects of chemicals/chemical reactions, some metalic finishes require special polishes) What you could use, is a regular silicone spray,BUT NOT FREEHAND,it goes everwhere, bloody fast.Obtain it frome your local upholsterer or upholstery requisites supplier.Clean your bike first- your usual way. Then using a clean, white lint free cloth, spray at close quarters into the cloth a small amount of the silicone. SEVERE WARNING!!!>DO NOT INHALE IT.Be very careful, not to get any on the tyres/tubs, rims or brake blokes. The problem with regular automobile polish is the white residual dust.Turtle Wax-Gloss Guard is another good alternative to automobile polish,It is a protective over lay,it can be applied after using TRADITIONAL WAX POLISH(HARD WORK),or used on new paintwork.Elbowgrease is not a product in itself, but can produce wonderful results.
Hi,I am returnig to pedal power after a longish period of drying out my Vega+nail on plates. My first serious bike was a 1937 Hetchins Curly(track frame)My current rocket is a Bianchi Reparto Corse,Gold Race 600.A nice little Italian.

I would avoid using a car polish as it takes off a small layer of paint. In the past I have cleaned the bike and waxed it as this gives the paint a protective layer and will cause any rain or water to bead off

    hope this helps!

GT85 after washing, on a clean dry cloth........ don't get it near your rotors etc but any parts of the rig that you can - excellent bit of kit the ol' GT85 is!
  • Polish removes layers, simple as that, it makes paintwork and laquer flatter and smoother, most polishes only remove tiny amounts, and doing it by hand will remove even less.

Wax adds a protective layer, which would probably be more effective at helping keep bike looking new.

This is complicated slightly by car cleaning products often putting wax in polish :)
