LOST: Motivation

Last seen in north-west England, about 2 months ago (could be anywhere by now).
Last year despite a few setbacks I was pleased with the amount of riding I did throughout the year, so at the start of this year I intended to build on it and do more than ever.
Got off to a bumpy start with all the snow and ice, but then when Spring kicked in I started ramping the miles up. On 5th April I did 88 miles on a fantastic day, the first full day of warm sunshine since god knows when, and it felt goooood
It was nearly 2 months til the next one, a not-very-ambitious 40-odd mile outing, and it didn't go great anyway. I had a sore throat which broke out into a throat infection the next day, and I lost a contact lens halfway round which wasn't great on busy local roads.
It's now not far off 2 months since that day. The daily commute hasn't even been that great, I've been suffering in the heat and humidity and headwinds. I'm busy nearly every weekend lately so the odd Sunday I get free I want to go for a ride, but moreso I want to stay in and do nothing. Tomorrow is one of those days.
Where's that 5th April feeling gone

.. try a different route...just ride in one direction and keep going, get yourself lost, then work your way home... set yourself an "easy" pace, enjoy the weather, and dont think to hard about it... you have to take the pressure off yourself... and rediscover the simple pleasure of riding your bike...
good luck0 -
If you're based in Liverpool.... can't you just steal someone elses motivation ?

Maybe take a break for a while, and see if you come back to it fresh...
You sound as if you are getting lethargic? Possibly getting knackered. Do you have any rest days, or longer? You are obviously finding the commute a struggle, and then you are trying to cycle at the weekends as well (if I read your post correctly).0 -
mgcycleguy - I rarely ride the same route twice so I don't think it's that. I usually jump on the train to somewhere then do a loop and back to the station, so I tend to ride in a different area each time.

jimmypippa - the commute's alright - I'd go stir crazy if I had to get the bus instead - but I'm not trying to ride at weekends too. Just that when a free Sunday comes up, they're so few and far between lately that I seize the chance for a "rest day"! Tomorrow's my first such day in about 6 weeks and the last for another 4. I've just got too much other stuff on lately.
I intend. No. I WILL go out tomorrow. I promise :P0 -
What is your goal? I wouldn't ride my bike if I didn't have a goal to motivate me.

I'd suggest the correct answer would be 'join a club that's right for you'. Nothing demotivated me more than the politics at my old club. Whereas I'm getting a lot of motivation from the support I'm getting from my current mob, as well as enjoyment from helping them to rebuild after a few lean years.0 -

I agree Gavin, i've got a lot out of helping at the club and it has motivated me to start training properly in order to race next year. Never would have done this without being part of club."If you think you can, or if you think you can't, your right" Henry Ford0 -
It's OK, call off the search, I found it
I stayed up late last night preparing my bike (how can it be so hot at 10pm!) at fought the urge to go back to sleep when my alarm went off early this morning. Northern Rail tried to scupper my plans - all trains delayed or cancelled thanks to points failure - but just as I was about to give up my train limped into the station and off I went to Preston, for a loop round the Bowland hills and across the Fylde.
What a glorious day. Felt very little effect of three months without a decent ride. I kept extending it further and further and throwing more hills in too. Managed nearly 70 miles with not too many ill effects (note to self: have a proper meal the night before, not a takeaway). I even laughed in the face of a 25% hill I'd been avoiding for a while. I saw several apocalyptic-looking rain showers round and about, and missed them all - the only one that crossed my path did so while I was in the cafe
