I have some 'Sennheiser' in-hear headphones for my MP3, which are good headphones for normal use, but tend to pop out of sweaty ears after a while during cycling.

Has anyone got any good recommendations regarding sports heaphones for when out on the trails?

I have some Creative EP-630 in ear headphones (cheaper but allegedly as good as the Sennheisers). They came with different sized ear buds, the large ones stay put better than any others I have used. Maybe I have deep earholes...

The other options could be those with the plastic loop that goes around the ears, but they may interfere with the helmet and be less comfy, also I find any but in ear ones are too susceptible to the rush of air when I am at speed.

The 'Sennheiser' earphones I have are a superb sound, but I've been toying with the idea of the plastic loop, or hook style earphones to see if they are better at staying put during cycling.

You do raise a good point regarding helmet interference (ooer, Missus! ) though.

Trouble is most earphones will pop out regardless, i know i've been through a few.

An option would be to try comply foam tips for your earphones, the best option is to have customs made but they are upwards of £300.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Helmet interference is a bit distracting on a bike!

I loop the cord around the helmet strap each side by my ear, that way there is no tension or pulling in use. They seem to stay in fine.

I use philips over the ear earphones, £20 from argos. very comfy and good sound. i use a sansa clip for riding very small, lightweight and better sound than my ipod nano!

  • the ones i have found best are the sony ex71/senheisser cx300 style with the soft rubber boot that sits in your ear, they fit well enough to stay in at 30+ mph downhill on roads and sit fine on the trails, and also allow for normal trail noise etc. (i have mine so i can hear the tarffic, people's reply's to my cheery greetings etc.but so that i can hear the music too!)
    around £20ish too,
come with three different size rubber bits for your ears too!

(oddly enough, the black version get a higher rating than the white lol!)
very much like the earphones you get with the sony ericsson walkman phones,

I bought some Sony earphones from Play some months ago, the ones that wrap around the back on your neck, ideal for running and biking, though  i've never tired them with a helmet lol, though i don't really like riding with music, distracts me when im on the road.

Note: i tried to find them on Play and there not there anymore soo :s

That type of headphone is ideal.
I use them for running, riding, weights, boxing etc. They always stay put.
It pays to wash the foam cover occasionally though, they can get pretty rank

Some are more confortable than others though, as the ear-hooks (for want of a better name) are made of hard plastic on some cheaper models, whereas my sony ones are a really soft latex-like spongy rubber.

i find in ear headphones with the rubber thing that goes round your ears annoying they work there way off your ears and dangle inbetween my frame and then my shoe catches them and pulls my neck down because i dont want to break them i find that also if you have cheap ones that you need to turn the volume right up which damages your ears.

But i do like how when i am bored i have something to listen to in the peak district

I don't have a prolem with wearing headphones on the road, but since I don't use the in-ear types, and I don't have them on very loud, I can still clearly hear traffic and such anyway.
I'm a sound engineer, so I look after my ears. Loud headphones are a big no-no for me!
  • I use Philips SHS3200 Ear Hook Headphones which you can get for between £8-£15 depending where you shop.

I like riding with them but at a volume that I can hear everything else around, in fact since using these compared to a cheaper pair I have the volume even lower now. I wear glasses all the time and these are not a problem.

Whilst I like the quiet when out and about, having some music helps me get into a routine when going up those steeper hills,
