I am coming into road biking as a noob and I have read that (and it seems to make sense) when buying a first bike, it is more important not to skimp on the frame but the groupsets can be compromised on because you can easily upgrade them. With that in mind, which of the entry level bikes come with the "best" frame?

I guess a second question is, is this the right way to go? Or should I just go for a standard entry level bike and if I wanna continue and go for an upgrade to buy a whole new bike and keep the old one as a winter trainer? That has it's own logic and is somewhat appealing too! Thanks in advance!!

I think the determining factor is your budget should you want to continue and upgrade later.

I don't think you'll want to spec up an entry level frame with Dura-Ace, etc. so if your budget will stretch to a complete bike, I would do that and then use your old bike as a Winter bike.

That's what I'm about to do.

    Yes, that one.
  • Cheers for the advice - I thought that was the best way to go! Cheap and cheerful for now then splash out for a complete bike when I upgrade!

Cycling Plus used to take apart bikes when they were reviewing them so that you could get the frame weights. The Specialized Allez at least used to come with a pretty nice frame.
