Zaskar Carbon

Seriously considering a purchase tomorrow of a Carbon Zaskar. I`ve just sold my Ibis hardtail and need a replacement. I don`t race and most of my riding is XC. I`m not really looking for alternatives just a bit of input and or opinions.
I`m quite a headstrong bugger and will take some of it with a pinch of salt . (A bit like bike reviews and tests)
I`ve been Mountain biking for 16 years and have tried pretty much the lot but I`m cracking on now (40  ) so FR and DH is a thing of the past now.
Any thoughts guys are appreciated

Just out of interest, why did you get rid of the ibis (i assume the tranny)?
The zaskar is lovely, what sort of budget do you have so we can suggest other lightweight bikes.
The scale is a great bike, there is probably a good focus. Storck rebel carbon :twisted:0 -
Change of circumstances brought about the sale of my last bike. Budget is £1500.
I`m also tempted by steel as I`ve had a Fat Chance in the past and it`s been pretty much on a pedastal since selling it a few years ago.
Just fancy a Carbon bike as I`ve never tried one before. I had an old Zaskar Le about 10 years ago and that was a decent machine as well....the system......you can`t beat it.0 -
Hmm, where's SuperSonic? I know he's on holiday, but I thought he'd be all over this topic like a bad rash0

A change in circumstances? But surely you're replacing one carbon hardtail with another?
The Tranny is such a GORGEOUS bike. Saw a guy out riding one of the copper coloured ones the other day. Possibly the nicest looking bike I've ever seen in the flesh.
Anyway, is £1500 budget for the frame, or the full bike?0 -
No, it was an Ibis Alibi. Alloy frame. Rode amazingly well. Personal circumstances, but I`m now in a position to buy again. Anyway. I was looking at around a £1500 ish for the whole bike....the system......you can`t beat it.0

Ahh, I see.
Well, if I had £1500 burning a hole in my pocket for a hardtail I'd look at a Whyte 905: http://www.whytebikes.com/2009/905.html
It's alu, not carbon, but has a great frame, pretty decent kit (Reba SL, SLX/XT drivetrain, Hayes Stroker Carbons, EA50/MonkeyBar finishing kit, Fi:zik Gobi, etc...), and under budget.
Worth a look?0 -

Serious alternative to be honest and was worth a look. Didn`t actually think of Whyte....the system......you can`t beat it.0 -
Too good a deal to turn down I think.

Very nice, good deal too 8)Adam.
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.
Current ride - Yeti ASR 5a X00 -
The zaskar is very cool, but you could build up a really nice steel hardtail for 1500.0

That is a great deal, but I'd still go for the Whyte. It may be a touch heavier, but when you look at the spec (Reba instead of Tora, SLX/XT instead of Deore/SLX, etc) I think it's a better all-round bike for almost exactly the same money.
Either way, I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed.0 -
Too late. Purchased a Zaskar today....the system......you can`t beat it.0

holy sweet mother of.....
there's only twenty minutes of the day gone, and you've already bought the bike?
Are you sure this wasn't a midnight smash 'n' grab?0 -
