Advice on small height stem but reasonable strong...

The new forks i bought dont has a steerer as long as i was expecting so am about an inch short of what i wanted. Got a few questions ragarding setting up a stem.

Can i have the stop direct onto of the headset without any stackers/spacers??

Can anyone recommend a stem with a small clamp area which is about 1" high?/ Its for a 1 1/8" steerer. Needs to be ok for basic jumping / street etc

Any ideas or am i gonna be looking at buying something different fork wise??

You ideally want one very thin spacer in there, but other than that take them all out!

maybe but you will need to check the stack height.

and you can run with no spacers if you want.

I'm waiting on bike shop next week to fit the headset cups for me and crown race. They charge peanuts for work like that (£12 for facing headset and BB, and BB fitting) so i'm gonna let them do the jobs i don't have the expencive tools for.

Once thats done i'll assembly it all up and see what steerer i have left to play with.

Whats the max gap you can safely leave between the top of the steerer tube and the top of the stem?? Given i'm gonna get something reasonably small would a headlock type setup help??

Right, now i've got the headset sorted i've test fitted it all and with a metal ruler flush to the top of the heatset to the top of the steerer i have 29.5mm so i guess that leaves me looking for a stem whch is 30-31mm high in the clamp area.

any suggestions??
