Has anyone used this before? Seems like a good idea for marking bikes and making less attractive to steal? Maybe it helps with insurance too?

I was looking at this site the other day.

    Seems like a good idea.

Would be interesting to hear from people who have joined it.

With some of the recent reports of thefts I'm eager to make my bikes are secure as possible.

    Me too.

Keep your eye on your local paper...The police often go to a local bike shop and mark peoples bikes for free.

I missed the last one in my area..Read the paper the day after the event lol

It probably WON'T make your ride less attractive to steal. Thieves won't care that there's a little sticker on it saying 'data-tag'. They may even think it's a cool brand!

It will, however, aid in proving the bike was (is!!) yours if it ever gets found. Which is hopeful that it will get found, but at least it's another minor precaution you can take!

Something I am seriously considering is talking to my local police station, and asking if they can keep a register of expensive bikes somewhere, along with photos. IE - photo's of the frame (and fork and shock if applicable) serial numbers, various photos of the bike, with at least one of every bike, with you in the photo. Again, further nails in the coffin, to prove it's yours, not some other dudes.

Gotta get round to that, as I think it would work quite well!

    www.immobilise.com

is free to register (you register your bike's serial number) - and can also add your mobile phone, ipod, camera, etc. And you can upload photos too. It's run by the contractors who run the police national lost property database and the data feeds directly into this (called NMPR, because it started out as the national mobile phone register, but quickly branched out into other commonly lost/stolen items).

From what I can tell Immobilise is the most "official" of the various registration schemes and most likely to be checked by all police forces (since it links to what is effectively the police national computer of property) whereas I can't imagine they all bother to check BikeRegister etc.

If I was a bike thief, I'd start a website like that. Not to suggest that these companies are dishonest of course but it might be worth keeping at the back of your mind.

Cheers for the immobilise link. I don't see the need to pay, especially if a website is supported by advertising.

I've got my bike marked and registered with bikeregister, for peace of mind more than anything. Also insured for the same reason. It won't deter thieves, as my last bike was marked (but not insured) and they had it.
