How can I tell if my rear mech needs replacing?

It's a ten yo deore LX 9 speed, replaced the jockey wheels and cables over the years, what else wears out? I wonder if it's not as rigid as it was, last time out I couldn't get the easy gear, got frustrated and ended up using more tactile techniques to get it to move to the right place (I bent it).

So ... how can I tell if it's worn out?

I guess you replace it, when it no longer works to your satisfaction (and once did), even after a full service and tune up?

Well if all that was wrong was you couldn't get it to shift to the big sprocket then either the cable tension needs adjusting or the screw stop needs a half a turn to allow the mech to shift over a little more, without ramming it into the spokes obviously ;)

However, as you "Bent it" you probably now need either a new mech or a new hanger or both :(

it is worn out when the pivots have play in them.
