Scary Clipless Moment and Friendly HGV

Had a scary clipless moment this morning on the Cut, just before the intersection with Blackfriars Road - went to clip out and my cleat was totally stuck in the pedal  I couldn't get it out and toppled over in the road, bike still attached. Finally managed to wrestle it out and dust myself off - thanks so much to the lovely passers by who stopped to help me up and see if I was ok :D I checked my shoe and the cleat had totally come off one one side and was twisted right up the shoe. They were fine last night and for Capital to Coast on Sunday so I have no idea what happened?

I wheeled up to Blackfriars road and got back on the bike (not clipping in, clearly!) and continued. At the next lights the HGV that had been behind me pulled up alongside and the driver was leaning overto ask if I was alright and to say that I had blood running down my arm and did I need any help - that was really nice of him so thank you Mr HGV man :D

I guess a trip to a bike shop is required at lunchtime to buy some more cleats.

They are honestly fine (she says with bandage on her arm: it's a small scrape and looks a lot worse than it is!) I was really scared before I started using them too but even after coming off a couple of times I'd still use them. Although I will now pay more attention to their maintenance!

What is really nice though is how helpful everyone was when I fell off. Just goes to show that there are some nice people out there amongst all the crazy drivers so I thought they deserved a mention :)

Similar thing happened to me (minus the crash). It sounds like one of the bolts into the shoe came out, either worked loose, or, possibly, broke.

When you get it repaired, use loctite on the new bolt.

...and check that the cleat bolts on your other shoe are tight as well!

...you don't want to be repeating a mirror-image repeat version of the above!

yeah... that won't work. I did the release-one-foot-and-put-it-down thing

Only I released the wrong foot and leant the opposite way.....
