most MTB road bikes have wheels that are simular in size you'd have a job to get much differnence that is due to wheel size.

So does anyone have any recommendations for an alternative commuter that is fast, comfortable, and reliable, plus cheaper...
If you're keen on the Alfine gears, I'm really liking my Charge Mixer, though my commute is just 4 miles each way. It will take full mudguards (I've SKS Bluemels on mine) though you need to contact Charge about the custom seat post clip and trim the guard stays.

Can be found for under £800 - not sure how much cheaper you wanted to go...

    Hi there,

I'm seriously considering buying a Cannondale Bad Boy 8 http://gb.cannondale.com/bikes/09/ce/model-9BR8.html. I love the idea of simplicity and having ridden it for a go, the Alfine hub gears work very nicely. Intending to use this bike as my commuter (30 miles round trip) a few time a week, replacing my current hack bike which is an old Kona CinderCone with skinnies.

    Any alternatives?
    Any advice?
    Pro's?
    Con's?

Any advice from owners would be appreciated as well as from those who decided against getting one.

    Thanks
    Paul

I get overtaken by one every day  . Not sure if that helps.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Hi Fury21, indeed the Charge Mixer was the first bike I considered. It's a lovely bike but for the distance I think it's going to be too aggressive for me. The slacker geometry of the Bad boy was appealing from a comfort perspective.

If you're interested in hub gears have a look at the Trek Soho 09 with belt drive. I've been commuting on one for a week and so far I'm quite impressed.
