    Avoid them.

Single piston design means that you will have to adjust them all the time.

Very wooden in feel, no modulation they're either on or off.

What's your budget as you can get much better brakes for not a lot of cash.

I have the HFX-9, they came on my bike and they work just fine, not needed bleeding in the last year of use and just do what they are supposed to.

I like the Juicy 3, there's a lot of personal preference in brakes though.

Out of every brake I've ever tried, the Sole is by far the worst. Low end brake wise, old Shimano Deore/Juicy 3s/Tektro Auriga/Stroker Rydes etc are all miles better. That one piston design is rubbish, you can spend ages setting them up only for them to be utterly broken again 10 mins down the line.

I'd get the Juicys you just linked :)

I have haynes sole and I think they are ok, need to adjust them every 3 months or so but surely that is normal ?

few people over the top in slating them in my opinion.

Fair enough, but have you ever used any worse hydraulic discs? Where as virtually every other budget brake (all those I listed included in this) use 2 pistons that move in to press against the rotor, the Hayes Sole use 1 piston and rely on pushing the rotor over onto another brake pad in a fixed position.

Obviously brake wear is completely uneven, you have far less power, modulation is a bit odd as it's relying on bending a rotor before properly kicking in etc. Trying to set them up well involves putting the fixed pad as CLOSE to the rotor as you can to compensate, any grit etc will throw them out because of this.

It's a tiny 50p saving cut in production costs for a big drop in performance. Hayes HFX 9s or something would be much better, they feel a bit on/off but they're nothing like the Sole!

    +1 for Juicy 3's

I've used Hayes HFX-9's, Shimano Deore and various Juicy's and I'd go for the Juicy's every time. The Hayes brakes were the most maintenance needy and the Deore's always felt a bit under powered...

They are the only discs I have used !

Still, getting my taurine 4 next week, so may end up back on here agreeing with you.

i am not a newbie when it comes to brakes. i have had every make of brake on every type on bike. so if you are looking for brakes and have a budget then i know a bit. if you want any information about anything then just ask. but a good bit of advice, for a newbie, avid 3's are okay, but they are a bit of a faff and they dont have any on-lever adjustments, so if you want a good budget par of brakes, then the hayes 9 are incredible. amazing power, easy to adjust and very easy to bleed. also the pads are easy to replace. if you havent heard of pinkbike, then look it up. get parts a lot cheaper and all the latest biking news. its free too!

    Hope this helped!
