I need a new pair of spd's, ive got some specialized cheapy ones now but i keep getting the dreaded numb toes! I think i would rather have race style ones as opposed to skate style ones. I am looking for comfort more than anything but i prefer the hard soles of the racey shoes. cheers in advance.

Which ones do you have now? I've had no problems with the Spesh MTB Sports.0

I have some Spesh Sports to and only had dead toes on one foot and that was towards the end of a 80km ride, also have some Sidi Dragon 2's which are a bit more comfy and toes were fine on a 50km ride but could just be tightening them up differing amounts or the different insoles rather than the shoes themselves. They're pricey but might also be worth looking at the Shimano mouldable shoes, I doubt you'll get anything that fits better.0

try a supportive footbed before you buy new shoes if could be because you're collapsing your arch you're putting pressure on your foot causing the numbness, Specialized Body geometry and SQ labs are the main brands for it.0

I've also been suffering from numb toes, but for me it seems to be because my current shoes have too much venting. Always happens when there's a strong headwind or cooler temps - bloody disaster through the winter. So im trying on shimano's M1982n http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... hoes-31079 at the lbs at the weekend. No mesh vents at the very least.0

Yep, can recommend the Shimano M182N, they've got a nice wide toe box and a very stiff sole. Definitely a race shoe. Not really much cop for walking/running in due to the stiffness of the sole. So no good if you have to throw your bike over your shoulder and clamber over rocks a lot. The toe studs are handy for short hacks up muddy banks though. They're not vented either so you can wear them all year round. I believe they were specifally designed for UK riding.
I've also got the AM50's which are mega-comfy. Again, nice and wide in the toe box for my broad duck feet! The footplate is still quite stiff but not too stiff for the bike-a-hike stuff. The ankle protection is also a bonus if your fed up with bruising your ankles on cranks, rocks etc. Ideal for more extreme terrain but stiff enough to race in too. Vented.
Not much difference in weight between the two.0 -
