Are the Garmin team not still using the 705's??

If anyone was going to get an early release of the next gen the I presume they may be the ones!

    I have a 705 and wouldn't ride without it now....take the plunge...you won't regret it.

    thats ok then

a sample of problems from the motion based forum

    Confirmed issues remaining in 2.6
    1) Incomplete file deletion through computer access. Cannot delete 'Recent Finds' on the unit.
    2) Unreliability of virtual partner - false off-course issues - even when one is plonk on the magenta line, often at tight bends combined with short steep sections.
3a) Reliable behaviour when navigating GPX course that overlays / crosses-over or overlaps itself - also applies to virtual partner, which will skip.
3b) Starting with GPX file with many points, route calculation randomly misses points and makes straight lines off road, avoiding mapped roads and missing junctions. No issues on point accuracy on GTC.
    4) Please make the breadcrumb trail more visible; should be in a more visible colour and thickness, like the navigation pink line. (in another colour of course)
    5) Erratic calculation progress bar in first routing calculation of saved ride GPX file, reaches 100% and then does nothing for 2 minutes.

Issues confirmed in 2.5 - awaiting confirmation from Garmin
    6) Power dropouts and also spikes at times when receiving signal from ANT+ devices. You have to move the units to get fair signal reception.
    7) Power data recorded does not included zeros so the average power is too high.
Files are corrupted at times, trackpoints are not recorded correctly so activities will not import
    9) There are issues with properly recording data if you lose a course or do an unusual set of keypresses. (I stopped a course because it did not pick up the start. Then I started the course again. Everything displayed correctly yet nothing was recorded.)
    10) The name of the file contains the date and time but in GMT time not local time. It's a pain when it should be easy to find a file by date and time. I start my ride home just after 5pm Pacific time which ends up being just after midnight so today's ride home has a file name of just after midnight tomorrow. Just the filename, the data in the file itself is handled correctly by most programs.
    11) Advanced workouts are difficult to manage. Names are garbled, steps are missing and have to be re-entered.
    12) When a LAP is deleted from the 705, make sure that it is actually deleted so it really does not exist in the .TCX file. Currently when I delete a lap from the 705, the lap does not appear on the 705, but when I download to GTC, Motionbased or save the .TCX file onto the computer, the lap still shows up.
    13) Ability to change the purple / pink colour route line to a user definable colour. I find this colour extremely difficult to see in the daytime, resulting in me having to use the backlight whenever I am following a route! (Only Done for thin GPX track, not bold magenta line)
    14) Confusing display runs right to left or left to right on virtual partner / altitude displays when running a course.
In 2.5 GPX calculation behaviour is erratic, others have issues selecting items further down listed GPX names, sometimes causes unit to turn off.
    15) Issue with temperamental acceptance of GPX filenames. Is this fixed in 2.6??
    16) Limitation of 100 Waypoints.
    17) More accurate total climb and descent data. As many have reported, it reports more climbing that actually occurred. Notable hills seem to be correctly recorded, but flat areas seem to lead to climbs that aren't there.

    Wishes for new features
    18) add in "find places" an option to get "user waypoints" sorted by distance (nearest) (like in edge 305 did) (wishlist)
    19) let user set a user location that is not the actual position, in order to find what is around there. (ex: kid lunch plan earlier than expected. )
    20) re-enable (was working with edge 305) the use of nroute to allow voice directions when driving & using a laptop.(wishlist)
    21) an option to manually enter the slope of a SRM powermeter!)
    22) Calculate 'time to turning' based on recent speed.
    23) Odometer data field, rather than just trip
    23) In common with other handhelds, mark a location, waypoint with the thumbstick
    24) I'd like to add a feature on the wishlist: at the top half of the courses-screen, the ability to show the ETA at destination (end of course) and remaining time to destination (end of course) based on my actual (average) speed, not the speed programmed in the course
    25) make autorouting function on the Edge 705 same as rest of Garmin Automotive GPS autorouting function. Even the Garmin MOBILE XT - GPS (which i was using on my mobilephone prior to the Edge 705) works more efficiently.
    26) bigger north arrow on map
    27) Inverted text and silent alarm
    28) Compass display outside of normal navigation
    29) Control over sampling interval, by distance or time.

some may have been fixed in 2.7 but it created a whole more problems than it solved!

  • Firmware 2.8 is the latest now.

Firmware 2.7 corrupted my last few rides data, nice. But at least it averages power data better now.
The corruption problem is fixed in Firmware 2.8.

So now, they've got the 705 basically working properly* - what's that almost 18 months it's been out now?

For the next version, hopefully they'll bring out something smaller than a Netbook that doesn't have at least 3 more buttons that it actually needs.

Having said all that, it's still actually a pretty nifty unit though and well worth getting.

great aint it? firmware updates to put right things that were fine before the last firmware update cocked them up!

having said all that I wouldn't be without one now :)

oh and watch out for failing handlebar mounts! you may find your 705 ends up under a bus :D

You and me both, not scared though, just waiting for something worthwhile in the firmware to upgrade!

I guess I have experienced a few of those things.....I just put them down to being quirks....nothing bad enough to spoil my enjoyment of the unit..

  • Went from 2.6 to 2.7 and lately 2.8 all without any problems.

The 705 was a brilliant buy - also its replacement after crash damage was met with 1st rate support service from Garmin.

    Go for it!

I've been suffering from corrupted history (symptom is not being able to import completed rides into Training Centre of Sporttracks). Loads of people are having this problem, I've downgraded to the 2.60 firmware which never gave me any problems!
