If I was to blow some cash on some pretty serious wheels, which ones would you recommend? Usage will be XC riding - usually at The Lookout, on The Oxdrove or upcoming trips to Wales :)

Currently considering the following....

DT Swiss EX 1750

Fulcrum Red Metal 1

or for some serious cash....

Fulcrum Red Metal Zero

Crank Bros XC Cobalt.

The DTs are Enduro wheels - real overkill for XC riding. Some DH pros use them on the less tough courses!
XTRs are very nice wheels and worth considering. Specialized's excellent Roval wheels are worth a shout too http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/components/wheel-sets/product/roval-controle-xc-race-disc-wheelset-08-32048

or the SLs for more moolah

Alternatively, you could get some pretty damn light handbuilts - XTR or DT 240 hubs, Stans Olympic Rims, DT Revo or Super comp spokes.

Fulcrum Red Metal Zero's are supposed to be pretty good, and the Crank Bros Cobalt look gorgeous although you'll get better performance for the money.

Have you checked out any of the Mavic Crossmaxes or the Specialized Rovals?

Some Olympic ZTR rims on King/Kong hubs are apparently some of the lightest wheels around if that's what you're after...

Industry Nine Ultralite for the Bling also they are bloody good, super stiff, strong and the 120 point engagement is excellent you really notice it when you try a lesser wheel.

did i mention that they are light at 1440g a pair, tubeless ready as well.

If your a smooth rider they also do the ultralite race with Stans race 7000 rims which shave the weight down to 1320g

Out of interest, what bike are they for?

    I've just seen these:

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/PriceDrop/12/ ... 360029932/

Hard pushed to do better than that for the price.

Roval Controle's are still cheaper at RRP and lighter

i have some roval traverseeat about 1600g odd they are usefully light and still strong, not even that expensive at 360 quid!

i just got some mavic crossmax st which claim to be about 1650g and they are super duper, not sure id pay 500 quid for them though but i think merlin were banging them out at 350 quid, pretty good value.

cue the nay-sayers with their stories of dificult replacement parts and inferior build blah blah

Not sure how strong they would be but a set of Xentis Kappa's would look nice if money was no object.

I've got the XT M775 wheelset myself and so far can't fault it. Very light and smooth running and hasn't missed a beat even over some pretty aggressive singletrack.

Although I weight about 65kg and supposedly they are slightly flexy for heavier riders but I can't say I've noticed any fex.

Apparently they are - i'm about the same weight as you so have no issues myself either - but with only 24 spokes they'll not be that strong if you're heavy/overly aggressive with them i doubt.
They are also not particularly good vfm now Shimano have hiked all their prices - there's certainly better out there for the money. Paid just under £200 for mine a few months ago but i think they're a lot more now. That said, i do love mine.

ps - also you've got to factor in the cost of either new rotors or centre-lock adapters if you've got 6-bolt brakes at present.

yes if only I had realised that members of the general public can answer tech questions on wiggle, clearly uncensored ! But it's Friday and I am too hot to be so switched on.

big thanks to 'guru fronm hampshire' whoever he or she may be, the sheer irony of the name, you got to laugh !!

just got the 'your wiggle order has been despatched' email of doom, 8 minutes after asking them to upgrade to the disks for me, so I think it's going to have to be a returns scenario.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

How do these two compare just out of interest? Given the Mavics are narrower rims and heavier, do they feel any different when riding on them? Stiffer?

they dont feel much different to me to be honest but im not the most "in tune" rider.

they feel equally stiff as far as i can tell.
