Well folks i don't know if i's coincidence or just that i'm afat bar steward @230lbs but my rear wheel has had it (dt swiss x430 with 6 broken spokes in 7 weeks )
i was looking at merlin for a custom build but want something really strong i do a lot of hard core riding' the choices are rims xc717 /ex325 /es729 /dtxr4.2 /dtex5.1
and either hope pro 11 hubs or shimano xt.
What's your thoughts please?

how much do you have? For rims and spokes I would get Mavic EX721 or EN521, with double butted spokes.

Hubs is down to your preference - Hope has cartridge bearings and is marginally lighter, XT traditional cup and cone and is cheaper.
  • Don't want to spend a fortune but want something slightly more heavy duty if possible and just wondered which was best around that price range

Hope cost more. Both are as strong as each other really. Do you like servicing bearings, or prefer just changing a cartridge?

Also consider what axles you need for your forks ie thru axle, 20mm etc.

For heavy riding, at your weight, the EX721 sounds perfect.
  • Don't do any servicing of bike at the minute so that not really an issue,
i,m running standard q'r skewers through a shimano xt775 hub at the minute

The XT will be much quieter than the Hope, if that makes any difference to your decision.
  • What do you mean by quieter? when you freewheel?

Yep, the Hope Pro II is pretty noisy freewheeling.
