clanking freewheel/cassette

I have an 8 month old Specialized Sirrius Elite which has done 2500 miles, about 1000 of them through a pretty nasty winter. I have already had to replace the bottom bracket as it started to grind and now I seem to have a pretty random clank coming from the cassette/freewheel area of the bike. I have replaced the original 8 speed cassette with a shimano tiagra 8 speed as I wore the old one out (wasn't enlightened about chain maintenance until quite recently), but there were no spacers with the old and none with the new. If you grasp the cassette it is possible to wobble it about a bit, but no more than on my mates mountain bike and I have stripped the cassette off, cleaned, regreased, reassemble etc and that hasn't sorted the problem. The freewheel does sound pretty rough when the bike is being pushed along, but sounds okay while it's being ridden. Anyone got any ideas or had any similar problems? Could it be something else unrelated, don't seem to have any broken or loose spokes, but to tell the truth I'm not sure I know how to check if a spoke is loose anyway.

If the cassette is loose you will get a slight clanking noise as you pedal, try taking it to your LBS if you dont have any spacers to hand, chances are they will have a few spares somewhere. I don't know anything about shimano's road range, but was the new one the same width as the old one?
  • The origonal was a Sora 8 speed and I replaced it with a Tiagra 8 speed, so I wouldn't of thought there was any difference. The lockring made a loud clicking noise when I tightened it so I think it's all properly engaged. Can take it back to the shop where I got it at the weekend, who knows it might even be covered by the warranty......
