My MD has Spesh Tricross Singlecross which has a spinny spinny 42x18T setup. He's asked me to upgrade it for him - going to 46T with a new KMC chain and 700x28 Conti Duraskins. Sound ok, or should I go 48? He's 41 but quite fit and runs regularly, commuting in london on road with no major hills.

I'm not familiar with weird CX/MTB style brakes. His pads are shot and I need to replace them, he'll be buying from Wiggle so could someone point me in the right direction as to what to buy please? Brakes are:

Specialized forged linear pull brakes w/ cartridge pads

Thank you CX people!

IMy cruising gear for the tricross is 50/18, I occasionally (rarely) drop to 50/21 but am more reguarly popping to 50/16 - these are the middle 3 gears of the rear cassette

This is on 32c road tyres and I hold between 16 and 18 mph on the flat when on 50/18

Sorry I can't help you with the brakes as mine haven't worn out yet! They are twice the size of the road bike ones I have on my Carrera though

I swapped to a 16t rear which with 28mm tyres on gives a GI of 70. I find that works around here and I only spin out on the steeped hills at roughly 32mph. So a 48 should be about right if he is keeping the freewheel.

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Kool_Stop_Mountain_Dual_Compound_Pair_Of_Brake_Blocks/5300003394/ I think I will get something like these. The pads on the bike if they are like mine seem to have a bent clip/pin through them so rather than trying to source replacement pads I am going to go down the replace the shoe and holder route.

That's soooo old :) Does he still have his own teeth?

What sort of brakes does it have? Vs or cantis?

If Vs then just MTB brakes, if cantis then they are usually those that have the cylindrical rod coming out of them...

I'm running 44x16 on my tricross single. You can put fibrax or other shiman pattern mtb replacement pads in the holders on the brakes if just going for replacement pads.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Thanks wasn't sure because of the weird clip thingy. I was going to replace the whole lot. What hills are you getting up on the 44x16? So far I have got up 12% but that is it, I reckon 15% would go but def not the dreaded 20%!

Is that all it is? I always thought it was more than that! I can get up to 20-21 but always feel like I am spinning out then

Not sure of the gradient but I can do 2.7miles with
Total Ascent: 353 ft Total Descent: 102 ft Start Elevation: 88 ft End Elevation: 342 ft Min Elevation: 86 ft Max Elevation: 342 ft

and can fire that off in 15 mins

I used to think I was spinning out at 120-130 until I rode a fixie. Now I know I am spinning out when I get to 155-160! btw don't ever truly spin out on a fixie or you will find the back wheel locks up and starts jumping about and then throws you to the floor very roughly. You will also find yourself going arrrrghhhhhhhh during this.

50t if he's fit. No earthly reason to go lower than that.

    Koolstop will do the job.
