Iv just bought a new specialized fsr expert, i want to keep it in top condition, however i think my dick rotors have already been contaminated
what is the most effective way to clean them and the pads?
because i have heard many ways eg meths or white spirit can do the job. is this true?
also how can i stop this from happening again?

I nicked a little bottle of IPA (not the beer!) from work and use that on a CLEAN microfibre cloth. Seems to do the trick nicely. They use it here to clean scanners and stuff.0

Why do you think they're contaminated.
IPA (iso-propyl alcohol, available from maplins and IIRC chemists) is best for cleaning rotors. You might need new pads though0 -
What constitutes a contaminated disc brake? Explain?0

Dammit!! Beat me to it!! That is a classic tho...0 -
yup, if you accidentally contaminated your dick then give it a good clean and it'll be fine.
Dick pads have to be replaced if they are contaminated though
couldn't help it0 -

I just attempted to make the same joke, before realising you'd just done it, 10x better.0 -
nothing worse than when yer dick gets dirty....... give it a good clean but be sure if there's any abrasions on it that they don't sting when you apply the IPA....
:roll:It's been a while...0 -
If your dick rotor gets dirty get one of those STI checks...0

Going back to brake pads, I thought if you got a bit of grease or something on them, you could use a piece of lightweight sandpaper to gently remove the contaminated surface, leaving a clean pad behind?
I can't remember who told me that, or if I read it somewhere.
Can anybody clarify?0 -

Doesn't usually help... the pads tend to "absorb" contaminents. Leaving them terrible no matter what you do. It has been said that if you put them in the oven, they are cleaned. But I would rather just get some new pads.0 -
If your out on the trails, pee on your rotors...it works !The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine.0

I've tried to clean contaminated pads. My Hayes Strokers (Now replaced, dam things) where for ever getting contaminated, new pads weekly! I use my bike to commute and play so I picked up diesel and muck from the roads.
These are the techniques I have tried;
1. IPA, cleans the rotors fine but not the pads
2. IPA and sand paper, no success
3. Petrol from a zippo and a flame! Thought I could burn it off. No!
4. Oven on full. No
5. Petrol, then placed on gas cooker rings. Scary and still no effect.
6. Petrol, then a gas torch. even scarrier as one of them poped a little bit of very hot pad onto my leg! No effect!
Buy new pads!0 -

Fix it 'till it's broke0 -
i got my avid ultimate pads filed down because of the snow in february by evan's. Just clean clean the rotors and they will bed in but they still lack the power because at the end of the day they are ruined but you still get the wear out of them0
