Blackpool to Manchester - route advice

So I'm doing Mcr-Blackpool, and am hoping to make it back to Stockport afterwards, which is going to put me close to (or probably beyond) what I can do in terms of distance, so I'm looking for a the most direct route back, without sitting on the A6 for 25miles. Can anyone help?
