please please PURLEASE...
report all the pot holes on your routes. roads are getting steadily worse, and i think the more we report the quicker it may get done!
also you can report debris in your cycle lanes and roads. my route on Manchester ring road (trinity way to big roundabout at the intersection of the A57(M), B5218 and the A56) is particulary full of cr*p including, glass, plastic, bricks, stones, litter and road kill! i never once seen it swept!

you can report it via "fillthathole.org"
or direct to Manchester council...

hi Jax - I agree that the roads around us can be pretty crappy at times, partly the reason is that the border of bury and manchester isn't always clear so they think it's the other councils job to sort it...

there's a section of bury old rd that's a total nightmare from the top of cheetham hill to cheepfoot lane lights...

Its not just that, at the Jct of Mount Rd and Hyde Rd there has been the same smashed bottle covering the left hand lane since the start of the winter, Its the same as I can tell by the lable on some of the glass.

yes... i know it very well.. and ive reported holes on that one too. apparantly some of that comes under Salford council.
thats why i prefer Bury old rd. its more hilly, but the surface is in slightly better condition.

as you say, they probably try and pass the buck as the three boundaries are all in that area.

Actually the bit from Singleton Road (just before the shops) to Sheepfoot lane is a really nice surface it's just the cars pulling out from the shops you have to worry about.

However the bit from Cheetham hill to Singleton Road is a disgrace and to be honest is getting dangerous. I think the problem is that it's a lost bit of Salford. Bury Old Road is in the care of Salford council only for about 400m so they are probably not that bothered about it!!

I reported this stretch last month, there is a huge 1m square hole out about 2ft from the curb by the bust stop that on a road bike you have to avoid either by going very close to the curb or pulling out into the middle of the road.

It got reported via the site to salford council. The guy in charge of it said he had inspected it and it wasn't an "actionable" defect. I am going to take a picture this week as its pure bull.

I have just had to buy new wheels after a year (fulcrum racing 7s) and although they are cheap they cracked and I am pretty sure I should be avoiding this stretch best I can.

He did however say they had marked one point on that stretch that was actionable and its pretty funny because if you see it you can see a white square spraypainted around it by the council. Its on the exit of the side road (some close) before the bottom of the hill. Something tells me the amount of disruption to traffic on this road should they act on the potholes on the main stretch is why it isn't getting done.

If anyone in the Greater Manchester area is having problems with local councils failing to do reported work (and chances are you will have) then you will probably have to take it further.

Contact the local councillor for the area where the defect is, the council will have to give the councillor a written reason why they have failed to protect the public.

There has been an alarming increase recently in the council fobbing off members of the public that report pot-holes and other dangerous road surfaces, they are out to save money no matter what.

yes thats the one i reported.its huge, but not too deep! the surface exposed in the hole is a pale colour. very difficult to avoid, especially in winter as that bit of road is really dark. good idea to take a foto, get your bike wheel on the pic too, to get an idea of perspective. i wonder what actually makes it "actionable" then... maybe it needs to cover the whole surface of one side of the road!!

Apparently there is a public contact for people to report problems of vehicles parking in bike lanes in Manchester City Council's area. If doing so, please check the posted parking restrictions, as many bike lanes are only 'part time' priority for bikes!

Manchester Parking Enforcement Team's contact is Dave Wilkinson. His phone number is 0161 908 5825.

I am pretty sure it is actionable because if you look at the next left turn after it there is a small but deep hole there (no car wheel would be disturbed by it) that has a white box spraypainted round it which he told me was the only one on that stretch that needed doing.

I am convinvced its due to the fact that its a main stretch of road that features the 135 bus route (every ten minutes) and working on the hole given its right in the middle of the lane and covers almost all of it will cause major traffic problems. I wonder how long if they filled it the road would be shut though.
  • Bury is just terrible full stop. I regularly come down warmsley road from edenfield when I'm out on my ride and the state of the road/cycle lanes are disgusting. Same goes for the route through into whitefield down past heaton park.

Any of you bury lot fancy getting togetehr some time for a ride out somewhere?
Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!
I RIDE A KONA CADABRA -would you like to come and have a play with my magic link?
  • Some huge holes opening up on my route in now, funny how these things get a mention on the telly, associated with damage to cars, rarely mention the poor cyclist who goes splat in one.
    I ache, therefore I am.
