Thank goodness for lawyers' tabs

The front end of the workhorse had started to make funny clunking noises. The headset was perfect and everything else was screwed on, so I was a bit confused. There was a bit of play on the wheel whih felt like loose bearings, but I wouldn't have expected it to make these sorts of noises.
So, Saturday morning I rolled the bike out and shook the front around to try to find the noise, the something made me check the anti-theft QR thingie. It was *quite* loose. Ah.
The springiness of the fork was also just enough to keep the "QR" from rattling, which explains why it wasn't immediately obvious. For the first time I was thankful for what are usually just annoying "timewasters".

Strange I found nearly the same thing but mine became apparent at 30mph. Thought it to be 'speed wobble' until I checked.0

Lawyers tabs are the little metal tabs on the bottom of your fork that stop the wheel from falling straight out when you release the QR. You'll find that you need to release the QR then loosen it a couple of turns before it falls out.
They are there to prevent the accidental loss of your front wheel.
I believe they are called lawyers tabs because fork manufacturers started adding them after there was a court case attempting to sue the manufacturers of a set of forks that some poor geezer's front wheel had ejected from. Not climber, not sprinter, not rouleur0 -
