Dunno about better (better than Salsa? wash your mouth out ), but maybe cheaper....
you could try for a pair of Surly forks off ebay or classifieds. They come included on the Surly 1x1 but a lot of folks swap them out for a sus fork so they go spare.
Also look up on-one. They have steel forks that may be cheaper than that.
Pain in the butt though as you need to get a spare crown race or get the one off your sus fork. Personally I wouldn't bother unless you're planning for the swap to be permanent / semi permanent.Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer
If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
I can vouch for a surly fork, mine has been beaten sensless offroad and the powdercoat has held up very well. They tend to come with both V-brake and Disc mounts too, and for around 50pounds you can't go wrong.0

I'd look at the Kona P2 as well:

Triple butted, stupidly light - great fork.0 -
Hey Sonic - do you know how much it actually weighs? VS the Surly options? At that price seems like very good value!0
-
The original triple with V mounts was 695g!
But are longer nowadays, with disc mounts too so are about 850g.0 -
The Surly forks are quite a bit heavier due to the heavy duty design (boast being tandum capable) and the exact weights are as follows:
Surly 1x1: 1.1kg
Surly Instigator 1.4kg (I have this one)
Hope this helps in your decision.0 -
cheers all,so it looks like this is the winner,

Does look a little short at 413mm.0
-
so any help to which ones would best suit the bike?0

That length would make the fork low, tight and twictchy - iof that is what you want
440mm would be better.0
