I sometimes have to ride a section of road to get to my trails.

I've never ridden my MTB on the road.... that'd be commuting and I'd have to keep changing tyres!:lol:

Just though it was a bit silly tbh :D

youi must be one of the lucky (lazy) bar stewards who drives and put's his bike on his car and drives to the trail less than 2 miles away....

I jump if I judge it safe and not messing with pedestrians. You can get off and walk over, why shouldn't you be able to ride it? Ditto riding on empty pavements on a busy road. If it's safe and not messing with pedestrians, why not?

If its ok to ride on pavements on a pushbike, then next time i'm on my motorbike and there is no way through the traffic i might just mount the pavement and get to the front of the queue. Whoops! i just hit someone walking out of a shop door and killed them. Pavements are for pedestrians and traffic lights are for road users ie cars, buses cycles etc.
Cant believe the attitude of some of you guys thinking the rules of the road dont apply to you. Just because you can get away with stupid behaviour doesn't make it ok. Think of the poor sod who runs you over and has to look at your mangled body under their car or the old lady you knock over on the pavement when you cant be bothered to abide by the law.

Lights are a good place to practice some skills, trackstand till the light goes red then practice 4X starts to the next set. Good if you have some arses in a car next to you and smoke them

1 in 3 here will jump lights. Astonishing. No wonder cyclists are frowned on.

Road riders should be better at it?
What shocks me is that most of you drive, yet still are willing to mess around on the road when you are at the most risk from volvo driving maniacs*.

OK - I ride in London a lot which I am sure is a concentrated view of the cycling on road world - you get all sorts and know the majority of the riders in London are commuters but the worst offenders are couriers who think the rules dont apply to them - I have already stated my case for how I ride and I feel justified in it - I dont ride the pavement, dont jump lights except in one stated case where I know it is for my safety and may occassionally get a micron drop on the rest of the trafic by foretelling the light change.

I see plenty who bust the reds without slowing, jump the kerb to suit, change lanes at random and expect others to stop - a lot of these guys are the couriers who ride fixies and no brakes which to my way of thinking is a ridiculous option for the road - I mean these are track bikes - bikes with no brake but a locked back wheel have no place on the road. When you couple that with a desire to get somewhere fast to earn money its a recipe for law breaking albeit that these guys may be skilled enough and lucky enough to get away with it.

The problem is they enrage people who then have less respect for all other riders and act accordingly - I have come across at least two taxi drivers and 2 normal car drivers who have done their level best to either run me off the road due to some assumed slight or actually got out and threatened me - if I get further from people like this by taking my anticipatory action at lights I feel fullyjustified.

At empty pedestrian crossings I'll got through a red, but at junctions I won't go through a red, cars, lorries and buses would all come off better than me in a crash

I trackstand at the lights, then as the lights go yellow (and if there is no-one crossing) I explode off the line. I beat a car off the line once and he beeped at me

I ignore one set of lights when on red every day - simply because I turn left and straight into a cycle lane and never enter the flow of normal traffic.

Other than that I always obey the lights.

I'd like to raise a point here though - I think we should be able to turn left at red lights as long as the way is clear - for motor vehicles as well. It is a system I saw work very well when I was in USA a few years ago (they turn right, obviously).

If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.

But it is not a law in our country!

Jeesh people. Red lights mean stop. Pavements are for pedestrians. Simple. Just because another country's laws suit you better means nothing. I'd like to own a gun and pop tin cans in the desert at weekends with my Ma & Pa but I don't because this is England.

Possibly the only case I have seen so far where I personally may do the same thing.

Only question is, does the cycle lane start where you join it, or is it a continuation of a cycle lane coming from the opposite side of the lights? In which case you would possibly stand the chance of colliding with another cyclist coming through the green. If you see what I mean.

I agree with your comment about turning left on a red btw. Unfortunately though, until the govt wake up and do something about it, it is still illegal and therefore looks bad to other road users, wether I agree with it or not.

i always stop, but if i can, like if i am turning left, i will get off the bike and walk around the corner on the pavement, get back on and ride away, or if i am goin strait on, and the road wich intersects the road i am on has got a pedestrian crossing that is on green, i get off and walk across.

This is just an extension of the footpaths arguement of a week or two back some peopel are black and white, some people shades of grey and some people explode into full specturms of colour although in this arguement there is no one I have seen who has said lights dont apply to me at all.

I actually had a go at a guy who was riding his horrific old bike very slowly, not using the gears, wearing a lot of clothes for the weather and just wobbling along through every set of lights - Overtook him on one stretch, trackstanding for lights to change he sails past checks the road as he's still moving and wobbles on - I shouted he was supposed to stop to the general approval of a cabbie next to me - caught up with him on next road and mentioned politely that red lights mean stop - he wasn't very polite back and sounded spanish or something. I cycled off.

What is the point in getting off the bike to do that? You need to show some balls and just ride left or through red lights if you`re going to do it.

It is a pretty major rule of the road though. If car drivers adopted the same methodology there would be hell to pay.

We're not car drivers though mate.

When on an MTB i class myself as unaccountable to normal traffic laws.

Red lights, crossings, 1 way streets and Pavements...

Each and every one is fair game if you ask me.

These days, i come accross none of the above as i live in middle of n0where... but if i rode to somewhere with any... i'd do teh same as always.

Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

Fair enough, next time I see you out and about on the MTB, I will run you the fk over because when I am out in my Landrover I class myself as unaccountable to any laws whatsoever.

On my motorbikes i break selected laws.

Traffic islands in London/Reading being the major one people would frown at.

1 way streets also. Pedestrian walkways if need be.

    and of course, excessive speeding.

Traffic lights i honour on a motorbike .... (mostly because i have a numberplate on)
