See the comment. I don't think 300km is "excessive" for an amateur cyclist.

    Very scientific that article:
This stress on the body results in an abnormal increase in special molecules which in turn alter sperm quality.

    Riiiight, "Special Molecules" eh?

fantastic. 186 miles = 300km (what a coincidental round number hmmm)

    At the fertility doctor:
    Doc: so you cycle right
Commuter: yeah about 186 miles a week
Doc: oh dear, do you mean 186 exactly, or 185.5, it makes a big difference you know.

[fizzycist]Testicles are kept outside the body as the bodies natural heat would be bad for sperm.

So could it be that the heat generated from cycling, what with the friction and all, could be damaging the sperm.

However, the sperm used is the sperm produced six months ago. So what you did six months ago is reflected in the sperm you use today. :D SO stop cycling for six months, have rampant sex until you can't. Start Cycling again. Simples[/fizzycist]

As to the whole cycling damages sperm. So let me get this straight, I give up beer, smoking, kebab and whole load of unhealthy psychadelic things to get healthy have a healthy life/future and now they're telling me the very thing that is making me healthy is now hindering my ability to procreate and ensure a future through children.

I know! How about I just stuff myself in a box and my girlfriend can take me out when she 'needs' and put me back in when she's done.

Can't do anything these days without someone telling you its bad...

Although large amounts of cycling reduce the chance of having a child, it only reduces not exludes the chances of fathering children. As cyclists tend to be fitter and have healthier diets and lifestyles than non cyclists, it is still very possible to father children.

There are far worse things that can stop you (apart from vasectomies :) ) becoming a dad.

Having pedalled 108 miles last weekend to get away from the blighters only to find they were already at my destination when I rolled up, I'd contend that the cycling 186.1 miles a week is better for the nation, the environment and the self. I take it that cycling 500 miles a month and having the old snippy snip job is a belt & braces approach?

maybe it's just that after cycling 186 miles you're too shagged out to shag?

I hope cycling does reduce fertility (maybe I should have started years ago)

The Commander on reading that story decided that just 100 miles on his bike would do for the week.

I did tell him that at 40 he need not worry because he's past it anyway

I got a 'humph' reply

    Did someone call

Being level with Jens and just ahead of Lance and Chris (sounds good when put that way!) I don't think we have anything to worry about.

Still the article is good for the comical way it covers the subject, I'd be interested to see how long it takes Assos to release a pair of cycle shorts with "cooling" gel inserts to protect our little chaps!
